iPhone Duo's 100-Part Hinge Enters a Market Growing 0.5%
Apple's first foldable ships with a 3D-printed titanium hinge and a $1,999 price, but TrendForce forecasts the entire foldable smartphone category growing barely at all in 2026.
Apple's first foldable iPhone ships with a hinge built from more than 100 components and a frame that is 85 percent recycled titanium. TrendForce forecasts that Apple will still capture only 24.8 percent of the foldable smartphone market in its first year, tied exactly with Huawei and behind Samsung's 35.1 percent. The bigger number describes the market Apple just spent years engineering into: global foldable shipments are forecast to grow just 0.5 percent in 2026.
Apple announced the iPhone Duo on Sept. 9, pricing it from $1,999 for 256 gigabytes, with preorders opening Oct. 16 and availability from Oct. 23 in more than 70 countries. The device pairs a 7.6-inch inner display with a 5.4-inch cover screen, both rated to 3,000 nits peak brightness, and runs the same A20 Pro chip used in the iPhone 18 Pro line, which Apple says delivers up to 35 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro. Battery life runs to 31 hours of video on the inner display alone or 44 hours on the cover screen, according to Apple's own specifications. The camera system pairs a 48-megapixel Fusion Main sensor with a 48-megapixel Fusion Ultra Wide, plus a FaceTime camera mounted beneath the inner display rather than in a notch. Apple also said the iPhone Duo is the first iPhone built to support Apple Pencil over USB-C, though that support will not ship at launch on Oct. 23; the company gave no revised date.
The 10-layer display stack behind the crease
TrendForce's supply chain analysis describes a 10-layer stack of ultra-thin materials inside the folding display module, the layer count that has to bond and flex in unison every time the phone opens. Each additional layer is another point where lamination can fail at scale, which is why TrendForce frames Apple's entry as forcing tighter tolerances on ultra-thin glass and optically clear adhesive across the display supply chain rather than at Apple's assembly line alone.
A hinge with more than 100 parts, cast rather than machined
Apple's technical specifications page lists the enclosure as 85 percent recycled titanium, with the hinge cover made from 100 percent recycled titanium and produced by 3D printing rather than conventional machining. Closed, the device is 11.3 millimeters thick and weighs 254 grams; open, it thins to 5.2 millimeters. Front glass is Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says offers three times the scratch resistance of the material it replaces.
The crease is still there, MacRumors found
MacRumors reported that Apple's inner display uses a nano-texture polymer layer with what the outlet described as a micro-lens texture, written pixel by pixel using maskless laser lithography, intended to scatter reflected light and hide the fold line. Managing editor Juli Clover wrote that the crease remains visible under certain lighting but is less pronounced than on comparable Samsung devices, crediting viscoelastic adhesives that let the display's internal layers glide over each other as the hinge opens and closes rather than binding at the fold.
24.8 percent of a market growing 0.5 percent
TrendForce puts total 2026 foldable smartphone shipments at 20.2 million units, up just 0.5 percent from 2025, even with Apple entering for the first time. Samsung leads at roughly 7.1 million units. Apple and Huawei are forecast to tie at about 5 million units each, both good for 24.8 percent, with the remaining Android brands splitting 2.9 million units and 15.3 percent between them.

TrendForce credits Apple's entry with pushing the wider supply chain toward tighter tolerances on ultra-thin glass, optically clear adhesive and hinge assemblies, the same components behind Amkor's tripled Arizona packaging bet and the kind of process transition ASML, TSMC and Samsung are staging for their own next tooling generation. What Apple did not do, in either its newsroom announcement or its specifications page, is name which companies supply the ultra-thin glass or the hinge components themselves; TrendForce's shipment and share figures come from its own supply chain checks, not from an Apple disclosure, and the two companies describe the same 10-layer display stack from opposite ends without ever citing one another.
The next number worth watching is not a forecast. Preorders open Oct. 16 and shipments begin Oct. 23, the point at which TrendForce and its rivals start measuring sell-through instead of estimating it, and the 0.5 percent category growth figure either holds or gets revised against real Apple volume for the first time. A second marker sits further out: whether Apple ships the promised Apple Pencil support before or after that first sell-through data lands, since a delayed accessory is one more variable standing between a 100-component hinge and a device people actually buy in the volumes TrendForce is forecasting for the category as a whole.
