Universal Robots Launches Gen 7 Cobots, Withholds Pricing
The new UR10g, UR17g and UR18g arms are named for exactly what they lift and how far they reach, but Teradyne's robotics unit will not say what they cost.

Three arms named for their own spec sheet
Universal Robots, the cobot maker owned by Teradyne, introduced its seventh-generation robot platform on Sept. 14 at the IMTS trade show in Chicago, adding three arms to its lineup: the UR10g-1750, the UR17g-1300 and the UR18g-950, according to the company's announcement. The names are literal. The first number is the payload in kilograms and the second is the reach in millimeters, so the UR18g-950 lifts 18 kg (about 40 lb) out to 950 mm, and the UR10g-1750 lifts 10 kg out to 1,750 mm, a longer reach traded against a lighter load.
All three run on a redesigned CB7 controller that Universal Robots said delivers 40 percent more compute and a 30 percent smaller footprint than the controller it replaces, packaged in standalone and cabinet-integrated versions, according to The Robot Report. A companion teach pendant, the TP7 Core, is 20 percent lighter and adds a full HD display with a virtual joystick. Universal Robots said the CB7 controller is available at launch; it did not give a ship date for the three new arms themselves, and its announcement lists no price for any of the new hardware.
The software layer is PolyScope X, now with open APIs
Gen 7 runs on PolyScope X, an operating system Universal Robots said is certified to the ISO 10218-1 industrial robot safety standard and IEC 62443-4-1 at maturity level 3 for cybersecurity, and that exposes open APIs and native ROS2 support so outside developers can build directly on the controller rather than working around it. "Our vision ... is to be this destination platform for physical AI," Will Healy, Universal Robots' director of product and industry marketing, told The Robot Report. Jean-Pierre Hathout, president of Teradyne Robotics Group, put the pitch more plainly in the company's own release: "The robots of the AI era must be advanced, not complicated."
That openness is the point of the tool flange redesign, too. Healy said in the same interview that "nearly every application in robotics is moving towards having a camera at the wrist," and Gen 7's flange is built to standardize how third-party grippers and cameras mount and communicate. Universal Robots said more than 20 outside companies, including Cognex, Schunk, Robotiq, Psyonic and Inbolt, are building integrations for the platform, though none of those partner products carries a price or ship date in the announcement either.
What Gen 7 does not say
The gap in the announcement is money and dates for the parts that actually do the lifting. A buyer can read exactly how much weight the UR18g-950 moves and how far, but not what it costs or when it ships, only that the controller underneath it is ready now. Universal Robots' safety certifications, PLd Category 3 under ISO 13849-1 and UL1740 alongside the ISO 10218-1 mark, describe how the arms behave once installed; they say nothing about how long a shop waits to install one.

The arms join a lineup Universal Robots is positioning against a broader push, shared with rivals selling robot perception hardware, to get cobots handling tasks that used to require a person watching over them. Universal Robots is also courting the same teleoperation and training-data suppliers, including XDOF, that humanoid makers rely on to teach robots new tasks, a sign that the cobot and humanoid ends of the industry are increasingly buying from the same vendors even as their hardware looks nothing alike.
