Oracle Triples GPU Deliveries to 300,000, Backlog Grows Faster
Oracle's cloud backlog rose to $664 billion in the quarter ended Aug. 31, nearly seven times the $90 billion to $95 billion it plans to spend on capital projects this fiscal year.
Oracle delivered more than 300,000 GPUs and 850 megawatts of data center capacity to customers in its fiscal first quarter, the company said in a Sept. 10, 2026 earnings release covering the three months ended Aug. 31. Its remaining performance obligations, the contracted work not yet delivered, grew to $664 billion, up $209 billion from a year earlier.
The delivery number is real and it is large. Co-CEO Clay Magouyrk told investors on the earnings call, according to DataCenterDynamics, that the quarter's capacity delivered was almost three times what Oracle shipped in all of the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, and 73 percent of the total Oracle delivered in the entire prior fiscal year. Cloud infrastructure revenue reached $7.4 billion, up 121 percent from a year earlier, according to Oracle's own results. Total revenue was $19.3 billion, up 30 percent, and GAAP diluted earnings per share rose 55 percent to $1.56.
The gap between 300,000 GPUs and $664 billion
The number that matters here is not the delivery figure Oracle chose to headline. It is the ratio between what Oracle has built and what it has promised to build. Backlog grew by $209 billion in a single year, and Oracle booked more than $30 billion of new AI cloud contracts in the quarter alone, according to its earnings release. Delivered capacity, 300,000 GPUs and 850 megawatts, is the realized side of that ledger; a $664 billion backlog is the announced side, the work Oracle has sold but not yet energized. Oracle's own guidance puts fiscal 2027 capital spending at $90 billion to $95 billion, meaning the backlog is close to seven times what the company plans to spend building it out in fiscal 2027 alone, a multi-year construction obligation stacked on top of a single year's capex.

How Oracle grows without matching AWS or Microsoft's capex
Oracle's capex guidance sits well below Amazon's roughly $220 billion and Microsoft's roughly $175 billion for the same fiscal year, both figures DataCenterDynamics reported separately. Oracle's free cash flow was negative $5 billion for the quarter even as operating cash flow hit a record $23 billion, up 184 percent. CFO Hilary Maxson said the $26 billion increase in backlog booked in the most recent quarter alone came mostly from contracts structured as prepay or bring-your-own-hardware deals that do not require incremental capital from Oracle.
Magouyrk laid out the mechanics on the call: some customers pay upfront for hardware and let Oracle operate it; others use their own financing to prepay for capacity outright. Describing that third structure, he said the arrangement means "that doesn't require you to front the cash to go out and spend your dollars on that capex." It is a way to book a backlog the size of a small country's GDP without Oracle's balance sheet carrying the full weight of building it.
Old GPUs are still renewing at a premium
If the buildout were outrunning demand, the clearest signal would show up in what happens to hardware coming off contract. It is not showing up. Oracle said utilization across its fleet remains at 97.9 percent, and GPUs that came up for renewal in the quarter, the majority of them four years old or older, were renewed or resold at a 20 percent premium to their prior contract price. That is the opposite of what a market flooded with idle capacity looks like. Oracle also completed a $20 billion at-the-market equity sale during the quarter, part of a previously disclosed plan to raise roughly $40 billion in debt and equity for fiscal 2027.

What Oracle isn't saying yet
CEO Mike Sicilia told investors Oracle will unveil a new agentic AI accelerator at its AI World conference in October, without giving specs, a shipping date or a customer. DataCenterDynamics said Oracle has previously and consistently denied it was developing custom AI chips, which makes the tease either a reversal or a rebrand of a partner's silicon, and Oracle did not clarify which on the call. That ambiguity sits next to a company whose GPU accelerator strategy, like Intel's approach to its own inference chips, is being judged as much on what it discloses as on what it ships. Investors did not wait for the October answer. Oracle shares climbed around 6 percent in after-market trading following the call.
What would change this read is delivery slipping relative to backlog rather than the other way around, the point at which prepaid contracts start looking like the vendor financing that has sunk AI infrastructure buildouts before. For now, the ratio is moving in Oracle's favor: demand for capacity it has not yet built is growing faster than the capacity itself, the same appetite for accelerator supply that has quintupled the valuation of chip startup Positron since February.
