Positron AI's Valuation Hits $5 Billion, Five Times February's Mark
The $875 million round splits into a $375 million Series C and a Series C-1 of up to $500 million, funding a chip Positron has not yet taped out.
Inference-chip startup Positron AI said Thursday it raised $875 million at a $5 billion post-money valuation, a figure the company announced rather than one confirmed by any regulatory filing, in a release distributed over PR Newswire.
The tranche structure, in two pieces
The raise is not one round. A $375 million Series C priced the company at a $3.5 billion pre-money valuation, co-led by NEA, Andra Capital, Atreides Management, Valor Equity Partners and Dylan Patel's SemiAnalysis Capital. A separate Series C-1 of up to $500 million, led by NEA and investor Jim Clark, sits on top of it. Four new board members join as part of the deal: NEA's Forest Baskett, Atreides Management's Gavin Baker, Thomas Jermoluk of the Jim Clark Office, and Patel himself.
The multiple: $1 billion to $5 billion in seven months
Positron's most recent prior round was $230 million at a $1 billion valuation in February, Quartz reported via Yahoo Finance, putting Thursday's $5 billion figure at five times that mark in seven months. A jump of that size, on a company that has not yet shipped the chip this round is meant to fund, is a bet on demand outpacing Positron's ability to manufacture, not a bet confirmed by revenue Positron has disclosed.
| Round | Date | Amount | Valuation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prior round | February 2026 | $230 million | $1 billion |
| Series C + C-1 | September 2026 | $875 million | $5 billion post-money |
What LPDDR5X buys instead of HBM
Positron's pitch is architectural: its Asimov chip uses commodity LPDDR5X memory instead of the high-bandwidth memory most AI accelerators depend on, which Quartz said lets Positron sidestep the supply constraints squeezing buyers of high-bandwidth memory. Jim Clark said the design "balances compute, memory bandwidth and storage near ideally for inference requirements." Whether that architecture holds up against HBM-based competitors on cost per token served is not demonstrated by any benchmark in either company statement.
What the money is actually funding
Positron said proceeds will pay for the Asimov chip's tapeout at TSMC on the N3P process, due by the end of 2026; a 2-megawatt engineering data center and emulation platform; and the production ramp of Titan, a system combining four to eight Asimov chips into one node that Positron says will serve models with more than 16 trillion parameters and context windows past 10 million tokens. Production of Asimov is slated for the second half of 2027, per the company.
CEO Mitesh Agrawal, quoted by Quartz, said the company's focus now is to "tape out Asimov, bring Titan to production, and scale manufacturing to meet the demand in front of us." Positron's existing Atlas system has more than 50 racks deployed at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, according to its own release, the closest thing either statement offers to evidence that a customer is already paying for Positron's hardware today. The next dates to watch are the two Positron itself set: the Asimov tapeout by the close of 2026, and Titan production in the second half of 2027, alongside chip-inference startups covered here including Harvey's $550 million round and the tokens-per-watt claims Intel has yet to back with numbers.
