BYD Sets Oct. 13 Launch for Great Han With 1,008 Km Range

BYD will launch its Great Han flagship sedan on Oct. 13, with the rear-wheel-drive version rated at 1,008 kilometers (626 miles) of range on CLTC, the Chinese government's official range-testing cycle, Lu Tian, general manager of BYD's Dynasty-series sales, confirmed this week. Pre-orders have been open since BYD showed the car at the Chengdu Auto Show on Aug. 21.

The entry Premium trim starts at 249,900 yuan, about $37,200, with a Flagship rear-wheel-drive trim at 269,900 yuan and an all-wheel-drive version at 299,900 yuan, Electrek reported after reviewing BYD's specification sheet. All three share a 102.326 kWh battery pack; only the drivetrain and motor count change between them.

Two motors, one battery, a 128 km range trade-off

The rear-wheel-drive trims use a single 370-kilowatt (496-horsepower) motor and carry the 1,008 km CLTC rating. The all-wheel-drive trim adds a second, 200-kilowatt front motor for 570 kW combined, but its CLTC range drops to 880 km, a 128 km penalty for the added power, according to specifications CnEVPost obtained from BYD.

Blade Battery 2.0 and a 1,500-kilowatt charger

All three trims use BYD's Blade Battery 2.0 paired with what the company calls Flash Charging, a 1,500-kilowatt system it says takes the pack from 10 percent to 70 percent charge in five minutes and to 97 percent in nine, per specifications both outlets cited from BYD's own release. BYD has not published independent verification of that charging curve, and the figure is the company's own claim rather than a measurement from a third party.

Where Great Han sits above the existing Han L

Great Han is positioned as BYD's first D-segment flagship sedan in the Dynasty family, above the existing Han and Han L models still in production. At 5,256 mm long, 1,999 mm wide and riding a 3,130 mm wheelbase, it is longer than a Tesla Model S and closer in size to a long-wheelbase Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Electrek said. Standard equipment includes BYD's DiSus-A dual-chamber air suspension, rear-wheel steering and the God's Eye B driver-assistance system with automated parking.

The car pictured above is the current-generation Han EV; BYD has not released public images or a name confirmation distinguishing the Great Han from the existing Han L beyond the specifications and trim names both outlets published this week.

What BYD hasn't said

Neither outlet's coverage mentions an export market or a timeline for sales outside China, and a plug-in hybrid version of the same body is expected but has not entered pre-sales. BYD also has not disclosed real-world range figures; CLTC ratings typically run higher than the range a car returns on EPA-style cycles or in cold weather, a gap that will only be testable once cars reach customers after the Oct. 13 launch.
