Astranis Books a Whole Falcon 9 for Six MicroGEO Satellites in 2028, Leaving Customers and Price Unnamed
The Block 4 mission would use Impulse Space's Helios stage to reach geostationary orbit directly, a method Astranis first announced for a 2027 mission in September 2025.

Astranis upgraded its late-2024 SpaceX contract to a dedicated Falcon 9 for its fourth satellite batch, Block 4, giving it all the payload capacity on a 2028 flight, Via Satellite reported on October 26. The mission would carry six MicroGEO satellites, numbered 11 through 16, and place them directly into geostationary orbit (GEO) with Impulse Space's Helios upper stage.
Neither the contract price nor the customers have been disclosed. Via Satellite says Astranis has signed several initial customers for the flight but has not named them.
What is known about Block 4
| Item | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Launch year | 2028 | Via Satellite |
| Satellites | Six MicroGEO (numbers 11 to 16) | Via Satellite |
| Payload mass | 2,400 kg | Next Spaceflight tracker |
| Pad | SLC-40, Cape Canaveral | Next Spaceflight tracker |
| Upper stage | Impulse Space Helios | Via Satellite |
The tracker's 2,400 kg total works out to about 400 kg per satellite (my division); it is a tracker figure, not an Astranis specification, and Astranis has not published a per-satellite mass in anything we fetched. The tracker lists launch as no earlier than 2028 with no firm date.

John Gedmark, CEO and co-founder of Astranis, said "We've only just begun to ramp up production to meet the demand we are seeing for commercial and national security missions", and that the launch "means we can accelerate the critical infrastructure" Astranis is building for GEO and higher-orbit customers.
Why Helios matters to the schedule
Astranis satellites have used low-thrust electric propulsion to climb to GEO, which can take months. On September 15, 2025, Astranis announced an agreement with Impulse Space for a 2027 mission using Helios, whose Deneb chemical engine moves satellites from low Earth orbit to GEO in under 24 hours. Falcon 9 carries the stack only to low Earth orbit. Gedmark said then that it was "a faster, more reliable, and more cost-effective way for us to get our satellites operational".
Eric Romo, President and COO of Impulse Space, said in the same post "This is exactly the type of mission that Helios is designed for".
An open question on 2027 and 2028
The 2025 agreement says 2027. The Block 4 mission is 2028. Nothing in Via Satellite, the Astranis post or the tracker says whether the Impulse mission announced in 2025 is Block 4, or a different flight, so we cannot say the date slipped. Astranis's September 2025 post does not give a satellite count or a mass.
The near-term schedule is firmer. Via Satellite reports that Block 3 is planned for the first quarter of 2027, with customers Thaicom, Chunghwa Telecom, Apco Networks, MB Group and stc group. The 2024 dedicated Falcon 9 carried four MicroGEO satellites, so Block 4 raises the count per launch to six.
Taking a whole rocket for 2,400 kg is a bet on schedule control over launch cost per kilogram; it also puts six satellites behind one launch and one upper-stage burn. For a hardware cost angle in a different market, see our piece on Tesla's Optimus line, and for another certified-deployment story, ANYbotics' ANYmal X.
What would change this read: a named Block 4 customer or a published contract value, either of which would show whether the six satellites are already sold. Block 3 launching in the first quarter of 2027 would be the first test of the direct-to-GEO schedule claims.
