Profound Raises $180M at $1.8B, Up From $1B in February
The AI-marketing startup's own blog post claims 2,500 brand customers, more than double the 1,000-plus figure it gave the press the same week.

Profound, a startup that tracks and tries to influence how brands are described in AI chatbot answers, said Sept. 15 it raised a $180 million Series D at a $1.8 billion valuation, co-led by Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins. The round arrived seven months after its $96 million Series C priced the company at $1 billion in February, according to TechCrunch's report.
Profound was founded in 2024 in New York by chief executive James Cadwallader and Dylan Babbs, and has now raised more than $335 million. "Our customers have shown us how much more marketing teams can take on when they have purpose-built AI to help them do the work," Cadwallader wrote in the company's Series D announcement.
What answer-engine optimization means and who is paying for it
Profound sells what the industry calls AEO, or answer-engine optimization: monitoring and shaping how a brand gets described when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity a question instead of typing it into Google. Its named customers include Estée Lauder, Walmart, Zoom, Royal Bank of Canada, Stripe, Ramp, Cursor and Figma, and the company said in its blog post that the AI agents it tracks scan roughly 350,000 sources when they evaluate a brand.
A customer count that depends on which document you read
Profound's own Sept. 15 blog post says the platform now serves "over 2,500 brands." The figure TechCrunch and Tech Funding News each published the same week, describing the same announcement, was "1,000-plus" enterprise brands. Neither number is sourced to an audited count, and Profound has said nothing publicly about why the two figures it put out in the same news cycle do not match.
| AEO competitor | Total funding raised |
|---|---|
| Profound | $335 million |
| Bluefish | $68 million |
| Peec AI | $29 million |
The market Profound says it is chasing
An industry estimate cited by Tech Funding News put the global generative-engine-optimization market at about $1 billion in 2025, projecting growth to $17 billion by 2034. That is the scale of category Profound and its much smaller-funded rivals are betting on, and it depends entirely on AI systems continuing to cite brands by name in ways a marketing team can measure and try to influence, a dependency The Next Web's coverage flagged as the business's central risk.
- 20251 $ billions
- 2034 (projected)17 $ billions

Profound told Tech Funding News its revenue tripled over the past six months, a figure the company has not otherwise disclosed or broken out, in the way Positron AI left its own revenue growth unstated when its valuation jumped five times over. Unlike Gimlet Labs, which priced its own 7.5-times jump against a run-rate figure it did disclose, Profound's $1.8 billion mark rests on investor confidence in a category that did not exist as a funded business before 2024, plus two customer counts that do not agree with each other.
