Profound Hits Unicorn Status With $180M Series D at $1.8B
The startup that tracks how brands show up in AI search answers tripled its revenue in six months and raised again less than seven months after its last round.

Profound raised $180 million in a Series D round that values the company at $1.8 billion, the company said Sept. 15, 2026, crossing the unicorn threshold less than seven months after its Series C closed. Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins co-led the round.
The round marks Profound's second large check within a year. TechCrunch reported the company's prior Series C raised $96 million, though neither Profound nor TechCrunch gave the valuation that round carried, so the size of the jump to $1.8 billion cannot be measured against a public prior number. TechCrunch's own headline calls Profound an AEO startup, using the industry's own shorthand for the category without spelling it out.
What answer engine optimization actually means
Profound sells software in a category the industry calls AEO, short for answer engine optimization, the practice of tracking and shaping how a brand appears when a chatbot or AI search tool answers a question about it, rather than how it ranks in a traditional search results page. The company's product includes an automated agent it calls AI Marketer, which Profound says orchestrates research, content creation, reporting, paid advertising and competitive analysis for marketing teams, built on more than 2 billion real user prompts the company has logged.
| Round | Amount | Valuation | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Series C | $96 million | Undisclosed | About February 2026 |
| Series D | $180 million | $1.8 billion | Sept. 15, 2026 |
Lightspeed Venture Partners, Khosla Ventures, Saga Ventures and South Park Commons returned as investors alongside new backer Evantic, according to Profound's own announcement.
The customers Profound will name
Profound said it now serves more than 1,000 enterprise brands, representing 16 percent of the Fortune 500 and more than a third of the Fortune 100, and named Comcast, The Estée Lauder Companies and Walmart as customers in its release. Chief Executive James Cadwallader, in the company's own announcement, compared the product to how software development changed once AI agents could write code: "Developers no longer handwrite every line of code. Marketers now have that power with AI Marketer."
The revenue figure only one source printed
TechCrunch reported Profound's revenue grew threefold over the six months before the Series D closed, a specific figure that does not appear anywhere in Profound's own release. The company's announcement is precise about customer counts and Fortune 500 penetration and silent on revenue in dollars, the same asymmetry that showed up when MIND priced its Series B without stating a valuation and let a specific number come from outside reporting instead. Profound's own announcement also does not say what its valuation was at the Series C seven months ago, so the multiple implied by $1.8 billion cannot be checked against a public baseline the way Gimlet Labs' step-up from an $80 million Series A could be.
Profound said the new funding will go toward expanding AI Marketer's capabilities and its enterprise sales team. The next disclosure to watch is whether Profound states an actual revenue number the next time it raises, rather than the growth rate alone.
