Profound Doubles to $1.8B Valuation Seven Months After Its Last Round
The startup that helps brands show up in ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews says revenue tripled in six months, the number its new investors are pricing against.

Profound raised a $180 million Series D at a $1.8 billion valuation, co-led by Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins, according to TechCrunch, which broke the news Sept. 15. That is nearly double the $1 billion valuation Profound reached just seven months earlier, in February 2026, when a $96 million Series C first made it a unicorn.
Profound sells software that tracks and tries to influence how brands are described inside AI answer systems, including ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews, in a category the industry calls answer engine optimization, or AEO. The company says revenue grew threefold in the six months since the Series C, and it now counts more than 1,000 enterprise customers, including Comcast, The Estée Lauder Companies and Walmart, according to TechCrunch.
Founded two years ago by a marketing entrepreneur and a former Uber engineer
Profound was founded in 2024 by chief executive James Cadwallader and chief technology officer Dylan Babbs, a former Uber engineer, according to TechCrunch's reporting. The company started as an analytics tool that showed brands how often and how favorably they appeared in AI-generated answers, then expanded into helping those brands research and build the marketing strategies meant to change those answers.
The same two lead investors have now backed three of Profound's four rounds
Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins both participated in the February Series C and returned to co-lead the September Series D, meaning the pair have led or co-led three of Profound's four priced rounds since the company's 2024 founding, according to TechCrunch. Lightspeed Venture Partners and Khosla Ventures also invested in both rounds. Profound's total disclosed funding stood at $154.5 million across its first three rounds as of the February close, according to Everything-PR's report on the Series C; adding the new $180 million puts cumulative funding above $330 million in about eighteen months.

What TechCrunch's report does and does not say
TechCrunch's article states plainly that Profound "said" it raised the round; the piece does not include a direct quote from Cadwallader or any other Profound executive, does not disclose a profit or burn figure, and does not name a single competing AEO or GEO vendor by name, describing the field instead as "a wave of startups" chasing the same customers. That leaves the threefold revenue-growth figure and the 1,000-customer count as claims resting entirely on Profound's own disclosure.
Two rounds, one year, a valuation that outran the metric it is based on
| Round | Date | Amount | Valuation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Series C | February 2026 | $96 million | $1 billion |
| Series D | Sept. 15, 2026 | $180 million | $1.8 billion |
- Series C (Feb. 2026)1 $B
- Series D (Sept. 2026)1.8 $B

The comparable to watch
Profound's 1.8x valuation multiple in seven months echoes the pace set by Positron AI's climb to a $5 billion valuation and by Lightfield's $47 million Series A for an AI-agent CRM, both funded on a single disclosed growth metric rather than an audited revenue figure. AEO as a category is barely two years old, dated to Profound's own 2024 founding, which means there is no prior downturn to show whether these valuations survive a slowdown in enterprise marketing budgets. The next test is whether Profound discloses a net-revenue-retention or churn figure at its next round, something no AEO vendor covered on this beat in 2026 has volunteered.
