Numeral Raises $100 Million Ahead of California's Software Tax
The Series C, led again by Insight Partners, arrives as California prepares to tax prewritten software starting in 2027, the exact liability Numeral's platform calculates.

Numeral raised $100 million in a Series C led by Insight Partners, the sales-tax automation company said Sept. 23. Salesforce Ventures, Geodesic, Benchmark, Mayfield, FCVC, Y Combinator and Uncork also took part, bringing Numeral's total funding to $157 million since it was founded in 2023.
Numeral's growth figures arrive the same month as Stripe's own internal AI adoption metric drew scrutiny over what exactly it measured, a reminder that a percentage without its denominator invites the same question twice.
The deadline the round is timed to
California enacted legislation extending its sales and use tax to prewritten software starting in 2027, covering software-as-a-service and other remotely accessed products, according to Numeral's own announcement. That is precisely the category of liability Numeral's platform exists to calculate, which makes the timing of a $100 million raise, 15 months before the law takes effect, look less like coincidence than product-market alignment.
Sam Ross, Numeral's co-founder and chief executive, said sales tax has become a bigger operational challenge as companies grow across markets, systems and business models. Rebecca Liu-Doyle, a managing director at Insight Partners, said the complexity is only growing as regulations expand into new products and markets. Neither quote names a dollar figure Numeral is chasing with the new money beyond product development and expansion into software, manufacturing, distribution and wholesale accounts.
What Numeral's own numbers show
Transaction volume on Numeral's platform grew 327 percent year over year, the company said, and it expects its tax engine to process more than 80 million transactions. Those are volume figures, not revenue ones: Numeral did not disclose revenue, annual recurring revenue or a valuation alongside the round, a gap that sits next to a specific claim about accuracy. When customers migrate existing exemption certificates onto Numeral's system, 30 to 40 percent fail validation on the first attempt, according to the company, which is the kind of admission that undercuts as much as it supports the pitch.
| Round | Date | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Series B | Sept. 2025 | $35 million |
| Series C | Sept. 23, 2026 | $100 million |
The gap between two Septembers
Numeral's Series B, $35 million, closed in September 2025, meaning the company nearly tripled its raise size in about a year, and its total funding across all rounds reached $157 million. Arvind Ayyala, a partner at Geodesic Capital, said tax compliance has traditionally forced a choice between expensive manual work and software that still leaves an operational burden, framing Numeral's pitch as replacing headcount rather than adding a new line item.
What the announcement does not say is how Numeral's growth compares with other vertical AI-agent startups drawing similar checks this quarter, or what its 3,500-plus customers are actually being billed. Arcee AI's Series B, another AI round priced this month, at least disclosed the valuation Numeral's release leaves out entirely.
What comes next
California's 2027 effective date is the fixed point on the calendar that will test Numeral's platform against real filings rather than a sales pitch, and the next concrete signal is whether Numeral discloses a valuation, or at least a revenue figure, before that deadline arrives.
