YC Alum Mach9 Raises $34 Million After Dropping Survey Hardware for AI CAD Software
First Round and Bessemer co-led the Series A. The company has nearly 100 private-beta customers and discloses neither revenue nor valuation.

Mach9, a Y Combinator Summer 2021 company that sells AI-assisted CAD software for civil engineering, raised a $34 million Series A, TechCrunch reported on Oct. 21. First Round Capital and Bessemer Venture Partners led it. Valuation, total funding and revenue were not disclosed.
The company started as Mach9 Robotics, building surveying and inspection hardware, and dropped "Robotics" from its name when it stopped selling machines.
Who put in the money
Besides the two leads, TechCrunch lists Prudence, a New York early-stage firm focused on AI software for construction and real estate, and Quiet Capital, which was already an investor. TechCrunch's reporter, Sean O'Kane, does not give a per-investor split.
Mach9's Y Combinator profile lists 25 people in San Francisco and names Alexander Baikovitz and Haowen Shi as founders. It says the Digital Surveyor product, which pulls features out of LiDAR data, builds on Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute research.

Why hardware was dropped
Baikovitz, who co-founded the company in 2021, is quoted by TechCrunch saying that "the real pain was in their workflows." He said one customer's vice president told him: "I'm not interested in getting this cheaper, lower-cost hardware."
The bottleneck he describes is the step after capture. "It takes months to be able to deliver a project, and about a week per mile for someone to do manually," Baikovitz said. Mach9's software drafts features such as breaklines, curbs, striping, poles and signs from scan data, and an engineer reviews and finishes the drawing.
The traction figures
Two sets of numbers circulate, and they measure different things. TechCrunch says Mach9 has nearly 100 customers in a private beta and that its software has been used on more than 2,500 projects. The company's own site claims 100,000-plus miles surveyed, 2,500-plus projects delivered and 10 times faster extraction per technician.
All of those are vendor-supplied. Dividing the site's own figures gives about 40 miles per project. At Baikovitz's manual rate of a week a mile, 100,000 miles is 100,000 technician-weeks if done by hand, which is the comparison the 10x claim invites and the company has not independently verified.

Competition and what is missing
TechCrunch names Autodesk and Bentley Systems as the incumbents. It also mentions CivilGrid, which raised $26 million in August for underground mapping, and Blueprints AI, which generates permit-ready architectural blueprints.
Mach9's site lists Olsson, HNTB, WSDOT, Maryland DOT, the US Department of Energy, Langan and WSP among customer logos. A logo is not a contract, and the site publishes no pricing.
The company said the money goes to product, hiring industry experts and scaling the organisation. Mach9 has not said when the private beta ends or what the product will cost once it does.
