Impulse Space's $308 Million Extension Comes With Two Valuations
The round brings Impulse Space's Series D to $808 million, but Payload Space and a Reuters wire disagree on whether the new post-money figure is $5.4 billion or $5.6 billion.
Impulse Space added $308 million to its Series D funding round on Sept. 16, bringing the round's total to $808 million, the company said. The extension keeps the same investor group that closed the round's first $500 million in June, when Impulse said the company was valued at $4.26 billion.
Founder and chief executive Tom Mueller, who was SpaceX's first employee and its longtime propulsion chief before starting Impulse in 2021, said the extension reflects "the demand we're seeing from both our customers and investors, and momentum across the business." Investors in the extension include 137 Ventures, BANNER VC, DFJ Growth, Linse Capital, Lux Capital and Valor Equity Partners, all of whom also backed the June close.
Two valuations, one round
What the new money says the company is worth depends on which outlet is read. Payload Space, the space-industry trade publication, cited a person close to the deal putting the post-extension valuation at $5.4 billion. A Reuters dispatch carried by Yahoo Finance put the same figure at $5.6 billion. Impulse has not confirmed either number, and the two cannot both be the precise post-money mark on an $808 million round that started at $4.26 billion three months earlier.
That kind of gap is common on an extension rather than a priced new round: an extension typically keeps the prior round's share price fixed for the additional investors, so any new "valuation" is often an outside estimate rather than a term sheet figure Impulse itself is quoting.
What the money is paying for
Impulse hired Adam Townsend as chief financial officer, moving over from the same role at Vizio, where he also ran human resources; Townsend previously worked at CBS Corp., Showtime Networks and E-Trade Financial. The company's headcount has passed 600, more than double a year earlier, with 180 open roles still posted as of the announcement.
The capital is funding production of three vehicles: Mira, a maneuvering spacecraft Impulse calls flight-proven; Helios, a kick stage built around its Deneb engine for high-energy orbits; and Electra, an electric propulsion system Impulse unveiled in 2026. Impulse has sold out its Caravan 2 and Caravan 3 Helios rideshare missions planned for 2028 and booked additional dedicated flights for customers including Astranis and SES, according to Payload Space.
| Round | Date | Amount | Reported valuation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Series C | 2025 | $300 million | Undisclosed |
| Series D, initial close | June 2026 | $500 million | $4.26 billion |
| Series D, extension | Sept. 16, 2026 | $308 million | $5.4B–$5.6B, disputed |
The SpaceX shadow over every space term sheet
Impulse's extension landed three months after SpaceX itself went public, pricing shares at $135 on June 12 and closing the first trading day at $161, a 19 percent gain that pushed the IPO's proceeds to roughly $86 billion. Mueller's own history at that company gives his pitch a comparable no other kick-stage founder can claim, and late-stage space investors have priced several rounds since as if a public SpaceX changes what an exit could return. Crusoe used the same "initial close" language for its own $3.9 billion round, leaving room to add investors later the way Impulse did between June and September. Verda's $189 million round crossing a $1 billion valuation is a smaller-scale version of the same pattern: a headline number that outruns any single disclosed term sheet.
Impulse has not said when Helios will fly for the first time. The nearest confirmed dates on its calendar are the Space Force's National Security Space Launch Phase 3 Lane 1 award, which made Impulse the first upper-stage prime in that lane, and a $28 million contract extension from Space Systems Command's Space Safari Office for the VICTUS SALO 2 and 3 missions. Until Helios actually launches, the sold-out 2028 manifest is a backlog, not a flight record.
