Firstwork, a Y Combinator Company, Raises $15 Million Series A From Earlybird and Deel Ventures
Two outlets disagree on where the company is based and what the founder did before, and Deel is at once its investor, customer and the founders' former employer.

Firstwork, a Y Combinator company that sells AI agents to move frontline hires from job offer to first shift, raised a $15 million Series A led by Earlybird Venture Capital. TechFundingNews reported the round on 21 October and Inc42 on 23 October. Total funding is $20 million, and valuation was not disclosed in either account.
This is an announced round. Neither report says the money has closed in full, and neither names an amount from any single investor.
Who put money in
Legion VC and Deel Ventures are new investors. Gradient and Y Combinator, both existing, took part. TechFundingNews adds SOMA Capital, 468 Capital and Houghton Street Ventures, which Inc42 does not list. Firstwork's seed announcement described a $5 million round led by Gradient, with Y Combinator, SOMA Capital, 468 Capital, Houghton Street Ventures and angels from Deel and Job&Talent. That makes $20 million the sum of $5 million and $15 million.
Deel's position is the part to read twice. Deel Ventures is an investor, Deel is a named customer, and Inc42 describes both founders, Vardhan Kapoor and Shubham Choudhary, as former Deel executives. Tim Rehder, a general partner at Earlybird, was quoted by TechFundingNews saying "Firstwork is addressing one of the largest untouched opportunities for applied AI in enterprise software."
Where the sources disagree

The two reports do not agree on several basic facts, and neither contradiction is resolved by Firstwork's own pages that were read for this piece.
| Question | Inc42 | TechFundingNews |
|---|---|---|
| Headquarters | San Francisco | Setting up a London head office |
| Headcount | About 80% of staff in Bengaluru | About 45 employees |
| Kapoor's background | Former Deel executive | Formerly head of strategy and operations at Deliveroo |
| Announcement date | 23 October | 21 October |
The Bengaluru detail is why this belongs on the India desk: Inc42 says about 80% of the team works there, which would be roughly 36 people if TechFundingNews's headcount of 45 is right. The two figures come from different outlets and have not been reconciled. TechFundingNews quotes Kapoor saying "In this round, we are establishing our head office in London."
What it sells and what is unverified
Firstwork's agents handle document verification, background and right-to-work checks, onboarding, training coordination and compliance, per Inc42, and plug into a customer's existing HR systems. Inc42 names Deel, Job&Talent, Relay, Wonolo and BGSF as customers. TechFundingNews says Firstwork works with employer-of-record firms, which legally employ staff on behalf of clients.
Three figures are company-reported and unaudited. More than 150,000 frontline workers start work through the platform each month. Firstwork says it cuts time per new hire by up to 90%. Its seed post said onboarding could be shortened by as much as three-quarters. Revenue is not disclosed.
Inc42 cites IMARC for India's HR technology market growing from $1.12 billion in 2024 to $2.3 billion by 2033, and lists Hunar.AI (₹40 crore raised) and TurboHire ($6 million Series A led by IvyCap Ventures in August 2025) as competitors. Both are smaller rounds than this one. For a comparison of what investors pay once revenue is public, see Legora's $550 million raise, and for another recent Y Combinator company selling to agent builders, see Alter.
The next dated event is the London office. Kapoor's quote ties it to this round, but no opening date was reported.
