Cognition Raises $2 Billion as Its Revenue Multiple Holds Steady
The Devin maker raised $2 billion at a $48 billion valuation on Sept. 8, but the multiple investors are paying for each dollar of revenue barely moved from May.
Cognition raised more than $2 billion in a Series E round announced Sept. 8, pushing its post-money valuation to $48 billion, according to the company's own announcement. Andreessen Horowitz and Accel led the round as new investors, joined by existing backers Founders Fund, General Catalyst and Avenir, Cognition said.
The valuation is not the number that tells you the most. Cognition's annualized run-rate revenue grew to almost $900 million as of September, up from $492 million in May, the company said in its announcement. Set the two figures against their matching valuations: $26 billion divided by $492 million works out to about 53 times revenue in May, and $48 billion divided by $900 million comes to roughly the same multiple in September. The valuation nearly doubled in three and a half months because the revenue nearly doubled too, not because investors decided to pay more for the same dollar of sales.
The prior rounds set the pace
Cognition, founded in 2024 by chief executive Scott Wu, closed a $400 million round in September 2025 at a $10.2 billion post-money valuation, according to TechCrunch's report on the May round. It then raised more than $1 billion in a Series D on May 27, 2026, at a $25 billion pre-money and $26 billion post-money valuation, led by Lux Capital, General Catalyst and 8VC, TechCrunch reported. That is a valuation path of $10.2 billion to $26 billion to $48 billion inside 12 months, tracking revenue that TechCrunch reported grew on 50 percent month-over-month enterprise usage for six months running before the May round.
The comparable that undercuts the multiple
Cursor maker Anysphere sold to SpaceX for $60 billion after reporting more than $2 billion in annualized recurring revenue, according to TechCrunch's Sept. 8 report on the Cognition round, which put that deal at a multiple of 30 times revenue or lower. Cognition's implied 53 times is close to double that. Investors backing Cognition are not pricing it against what the last comparable AI coding company actually sold for; they are pricing it against Cognition's own trajectory, the same wager investors made on Harvey's $15.5 billion legal-AI valuation without a matching revenue figure to check it against. Cognition at least has one, which is why the multiple, not the headline number, is the useful comparison.

What $2 billion buys
Cognition's flagship product, Devin, plans and executes multi-step coding tasks rather than responding to individual prompts, the kind of longer-running "harness" GitHub itself started defining for AI coding agents this month, and the company added Devin Auto-Triage for incident investigation, a Devin Security Swarm for vulnerability scanning, and Devin Automations that trigger from Slack, GitHub and Linear events, per its announcement. Named enterprise customers include Nvidia for chip design work, GE Aerospace, Citi and Mercedes-Benz, Cognition said, though it did not disclose contract values for any of them. The company also said it is opening new offices in Washington, D.C., Tokyo, Singapore, London, São Paulo and Madrid, adding to existing locations in San Francisco, New York and Austin.
Cognition did not say in its announcement what it is paying Nvidia to run Devin's infrastructure, and SiliconAngle reported that the company leases Nvidia server capacity costing hundreds of millions of dollars a year while developing its own model to cut that dependency. Whether that in-house model narrows the gap between Cognition's revenue multiple and Cursor's sale price, or whether Cognition simply keeps growing fast enough that the multiple stops mattering, is the question the next funding round will answer. Cognition's own blog projects $4 billion to $5 billion in annualized revenue by the end of 2026, a company estimate the round's investors are now underwriting rather than a figure anyone outside Cognition has confirmed.
