Cognition's $48 Billion Round Keeps May's 53 Times Revenue Multiple
Valuation rose 85 percent in three months while run-rate revenue rose 83 percent, so investors paid the same price per dollar of revenue as in May.
Cognition raised more than $2 billion at a $48 billion post-money valuation on Sept. 8, and the price per dollar of revenue barely moved: about 53 times run-rate revenue, against about 53 times in May.
TechCrunch reported the Series E, which the company announced in a blog post, as co-led by Andreessen Horowitz and Accel with Founders Fund, General Catalyst and Avenir. That is an announcement of the round. No filing the outlets cite confirms the amount as closed.
Two rounds, one multiple
Cognition, the maker of the Devin coding agent, founded in 2024 by chief executive Scott Wu, said its annualized run-rate revenue has grown from $492 million to almost $900 million since its last round, PYMNTS reported. Run-rate revenue is one month's sales multiplied by twelve, so it flatters a company whose sales are still climbing.
| Round | Date | Valuation | Run-rate revenue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Series D | May 27, 2026 | $26 billion | $492 million |
| Series E | Sept. 8, 2026 | $48 billion | About $900 million |
The arithmetic is short. $26 billion divided by $492 million is about 53 times. $48 billion divided by roughly $900 million is also about 53 times. Valuation rose 85 percent and revenue rose 83 percent, so the gain came from growth rather than from investors paying more for each dollar. The May round was more than $1 billion, according to PYMNTS, which puts the two rounds at more than $3 billion in under four months.

What Cursor's price implies
TechCrunch put the round beside the company's closest rival. It reported that Cursor was valued at $50 billion in April financing talks and then sold to SpaceX for $60 billion, when its annualized revenue was above $2 billion. Divide $60 billion by $2 billion and the ceiling is 30 times, so Cognition's multiple is well above what Cursor's buyer paid. TechCrunch's own wording is that Cognition "currently commands a higher revenue multiple than Cursor did in the spring." The comparison is imperfect: one price is a private round for a minority stake, the other an acquisition price. Both are the only public reference points for the category.
TechCrunch's headline draws the conclusion that investors do not expect a single winner among coding agents. The numbers support that only as far as two companies each got a large price.
Costs the release does not price
TechCrunch reported that Cognition leases an Nvidia server cluster at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars a year and is training its own model to reduce its dependence on third-party providers. A 53 times multiple assumes that gross margin holds as usage grows. The sources fetched do not give Cognition's gross margin or profitability.
The customer lists also differ. PYMNTS names Nvidia, GE Aerospace, Citi, Mercedes-Benz and Modal as running Devin. TechCrunch names Mercedes-Benz, NASA, Goldman Sachs and Citi. Only Citi and Mercedes-Benz appear in both, and neither outlet says which list is complete. For how the largest private A.I. rounds are being priced on a different basis, see OpenAI's $30 billion request at a $1.4 trillion pre-money valuation, and for where the money is coming from, Bessemer's $5.75 billion fund.
The next reading is Cognition's run-rate revenue at its next round. If it is near $1.8 billion when the valuation next doubles, the 53 times multiple will have held a second time.
