Castelion's $1 Billion Round Is Really $800 Million in Equity
The Series C values the hypersonic missile maker at $13 billion, and a quarter of the headline number is an undrawn credit line, not paid-in capital.
Castelion, the Torrance, California, maker of the Blackbeard hypersonic strike missile, announced a $1 billion Series C on Aug. 19 that values the company at $13 billion. JPMorganChase's Strategic Investment Group, Andreessen Horowitz and funds managed by Carlyle co-led the round, according to Castelion's own announcement.
Only $800 million of that billion is equity. The remaining $250 million is a revolving credit facility, a committed line Castelion can draw against rather than cash already in the bank. The company's own release lists the two pieces separately; most of the coverage that followed did not, and repeated the round-number figure as if all of it were paid-in capital.
The Series C follows a $350 million Series B closed in December 2025, in which Castelion did not disclose a valuation, and which was led by Altimeter Capital and Lightspeed Venture Partners. Eight months and, by the company's count, more than 25 flight tests separate an undisclosed Series B mark from $13 billion.
What the Navy has actually paid Castelion
Castelion says it has secured more than $500 million in U.S. military contracts over the past 18 months, and three of those awards are public.
| Date | Amount | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| February 2026 | $50 million | Navy award, undisclosed scope |
| April 2026 | $105 million | Integration with the F/A-18 |
| June 2026 | $23.4 million | 50 pre-production Blackbeard missiles |
That June order works out to roughly $468,000 per unit, above the roughly $384,000 per-missile cost Castelion says it is targeting once Project Ranger reaches volume production.
Government contracts are not recurring revenue in the way a software company's are, so a $13 billion valuation cannot be reduced to a clean multiple against $500 million of awards the way Cognition's investors priced a multiple against its run-rate revenue this month. What the two rounds share is a bet that a number achieved in 2026 justifies a valuation set for a scale the company has not yet reached.
Project Ranger's build-out
The new capital is earmarked for expanding Project Ranger, Castelion's 1,000-acre production campus in Sandoval County, New Mexico, toward a planned capacity of several thousand missiles a year, with a guaranteed minimum of 500 Blackbeard units annually once the line is running. T. Rowe Price Associates joined the cap table for the first time in this round; Lightspeed, General Catalyst and Interlagos, all Series B backers, returned.
The wager is close in shape to Amkor's decision to triple its Arizona packaging campus to $12 billion: both companies are asking private investors to fund the kind of heavy manufacturing build-out that used to run through defense or industrial-policy budgets, on the argument that the government will still be the customer once the capacity exists.
What Castelion has not said
Castelion has not disclosed its Series B valuation, which means the actual step-up between rounds cannot be calculated from public information. The company also has not said what share of the $250 million credit facility, if any, has been drawn since the round closed. Blackbeard's initial fielding is targeted for 2027, the same year Project Ranger is meant to be running at the volumes the new funding is supposed to pay for.
