VW's Cheap EVs Pass 150,000 Orders While Its US Deliveries Fall 78%
Volkswagen's four-model urban EV family added about 96,000 orders in 94 days, but Europe supplied 87% of the group's Q3 electric deliveries.

Volkswagen Group said on Oct. 12 that it has taken nearly 150,000 orders for its four-model Electric Urban Car Family, up from more than 54,000 in its July 10 release. The same release shows where the group's electric business actually sits: Europe took 209,100 of its 240,200 battery-electric deliveries in the third quarter, about 87%, while US deliveries fell 86.4% to 5,100.
Both numbers come from Volkswagen Group's own release, which counts the family as the VW ID. Polo and ID. Cross, the Škoda Epiq and the CUPRA Raval. Electrek reported the same day that series production began in June 2026.
From 54,000 to 150,000 orders in 94 days
The July 10 release put orders at "more than 54,000" and said three of the four models were available. The October release says "nearly 150,000". Treating those as 54,000 and 150,000, the family added about 96,000 orders in 94 days, roughly 1,000 a day.

The denominator matters here. Orders are not deliveries or registrations, and the release gives no split by model, country or delivery date. For scale, 150,000 orders equal about 72% of the 209,100 battery-electric vehicles Volkswagen delivered in Europe in the third quarter alone. It is a large backlog against one quarter's output, and it says nothing yet about how fast the factories can turn it into cars.
The pricing explains some of the pull. Electrek lists the ID. Polo Trend with a 37 kWh battery at €24,995 and a WLTP range of 334 km, which works out to about €75 per kilometre of rated range (our arithmetic). The ID. Cross starts at €27,995 in Germany.
Europe is now 87% of the group's electric deliveries
The headline order figure sits against a global picture that is shrinking. Group-wide battery-electric deliveries fell 4.7% in the third quarter and 5.4% over nine months.
| Region | Q3 2026 BEV deliveries | Change | Jan-Sep 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Europe | 209,100 | +19.6% | 586,100 (+12.1%) |
| USA | 5,100 | -86.4% | 14,900 (-78.4%) |
| China | 18,000 | -30.1% | 48,900 (-42.5%) |
| Worldwide | 240,200 | -4.7% | 678,700 (-5.4%) |
Europe's share of those 678,700 nine-month deliveries is 86%, our arithmetic from the release. The United States and China together account for 63,800, under 10%. Electrek reports that Volkswagen blamed the US decline on the expiry of the $7,500 federal tax credit plus import tariffs, and that it has ended ID.4 production in the US; the ID. Tiguan, which replaces the ID.4 and ID.5, goes on sale in early 2027.

What Volkswagen says is driving it
Martin Sander, a member of the group's Extended Executive Committee for Sales, said in the release: "In our home market, we are seeing a significantly accelerated trend towards all-electric vehicles." The release puts battery-electric vehicles at around 40% of the European order book, with that order book roughly double its year-end 2025 level and order intake up more than 60% in the third quarter. In the July release the order book was up more than 50% against the end of 2025. Electrek attributes the shift to high fuel prices and the new entry-level cars, and adds that German orders for pure electric vehicles now exceed orders for combustion cars.
Sander also called the family "a tremendous success". That is a company's description of its own order book, and the order book is the only measure it has published.
For comparison, the release's best-seller list, whose period it does not state, has the Škoda Elroq first at 92,200 units, the ID.4 and ID.5 at 81,900 and the Škoda Enyaq at 72,700. None of the four new models appears in it, which is expected for cars whose series production began in June 2026. It also means 150,000 orders have not yet turned into a delivery count anyone can compare.
The counter-case: a smaller group around a cheaper car
Volkswagen's total deliveries across all powertrains were 6.01 million in the first nine months, down 9%, per Electrek. A cheaper car lowers the revenue per order, and Electrek notes the group's supervisory board has approved Future Plan 2030, which calls for cutting up to 100,000 jobs and closing plants. The Chinese competition is the other half of the case: Electrek's Peter Johnson writes that BYD and other Chinese brands are increasingly targeting Europe, Latin America and Southeast Asia, and calls Volkswagen's path "an uphill battle". Our coverage of the BYD Atto 8's flash-charging launch in Europe and the Smart #2's 290 km range shows how many rivals are arriving in the same price band.
What would change this read
Two figures would settle whether 150,000 orders is a durable demand signal or a queue. The first is deliveries of the four models by month, which Volkswagen has not published. The second is the cancellation rate on orders taken at the launch price. If the Q4 release shows Europe's battery-electric deliveries rising in step with the order book's 40% share, the cars are shipping; if the order count climbs while deliveries stay near 209,100 a quarter, the constraint is production, not demand.
