Porsche's Wireless Charger Reaches Series Production at 11 kW
The Cayenne Electric is the first Porsche with the receiver built in, though the company still hasn't said what the floor plate costs or when the U.S. gets one.

Porsche said its inductive wireless charging system has entered series production on the new Cayenne Electric, the first model in which the receiver is factory pre-installed, according to the automaker's newsroom post and Electrek's coverage of the Sept. 18 announcement. The system moves 11 kilowatts across an air gap of a few centimeters at up to 90 percent efficiency, matching the speed of a standard AC wallbox rather than beating it.
Porsche first showed a wireless-charging prototype in 2025; what changed this week is that the receiver and the ground-side base plate move from demonstration hardware to a purchasable option, sold through Porsche Centres and online starting later in 2026 in Germany and other European markets before a staged global rollout. The base plate itself is a 117-by-78-by-6-centimeter, roughly 50-kilogram unit Porsche calls a "one-box" design, built to replace the separate wallbox and control unit a wired home charger normally needs. Aligning a nearly two-and-a-half-tonne SUV over a plate that size is the actual engineering problem; Porsche solves it with ultra-wideband positioning that guides the driver into the parking space and, according to Electrek, motion sensors and foreign-object detection that halt charging if an animal wanders under the car or a piece of metal starts heating up.
"Charging an electric car at home has never been so easy and convenient," said Dr. Michael Steiner, Porsche's deputy chairman and board member for research and development, in the company's announcement.

Porsche's own figures make the case for convenience over speed: about 75 percent of EV charging already happens at home, where an 11-kilowatt ceiling matters less than not handling a cable. The Cayenne Electric's DC fast-charging figure, by contrast, is the highest in the current Porsche lineup at up to 400 kilowatts, ahead of the Taycan's 320 kilowatts and the Macan's 270 kilowatts, according to Porsche's newsroom post.
What the plate does not do
Eleven kilowatts is the ceiling for the wireless system, the same figure Porsche lists for its standard three-phase AC wallbox, so the pad buys convenience rather than speed: a driver who needs the Cayenne Electric's full 400-kilowatt DC capability still has to plug in at a public fast charger. Porsche has not published a price for the floor plate, has not said when the option reaches the United States, and has not disclosed who installs the roughly 50-kilogram base plate in a residential garage, a cost that likely lands on the buyer on top of the option itself.
The rest of the lineup isn't waiting on wireless
Porsche's announcement lands in a week of EV hardware news that has nothing to do with induction. BMW moved its iX3 deliveries up nine days by adding a shift at its Debrecen plant, and Toyota's cheapest EV kept growing even as the broader U.S. EV market contracted 46.9 percent. Neither story involves a charging pad, but both make the same point from a different angle: automakers are now competing on how an EV fits a buyer's routine and how fast it reaches a driveway, not only on range or sticker price.
What would change the read on wireless charging is adoption data once the option actually ships to paying customers rather than press fleets. Porsche has given no figures for how many Cayenne Electric buyers are expected to select it, and floor-plate sales, per the company's own timeline, have not started yet.
