Mistral Buys Pimento, but Won't Confirm the Price
One report puts the ad-tech acquisition at 12.7 million euros, another at 3.8 million, and Mistral told AFP only that it paid "several million euros" for its third deal since February.

Mistral AI has acquired Pimento, a Paris startup that turns ad briefs and brand guidelines into finished advertising visuals, the companies confirmed Sept. 22. It is Mistral's third acquisition of 2026, after the serverless infrastructure firm Koyeb in February and the industrial-physics startup Emmi AI in May, according to Dealroom's reporting on the deal.
The price is where the reporting splits. Sifted said the deal is worth 12.7 million euros in cash and shares, based on documents it reviewed. A French outlet, L'Informé, put the figure closer to 3.8 million euros. Mistral itself told the news agency AFP only that it paid "several million euros," The Next Web reported, confirming neither number. A gap that size, more than three times between the two reported figures, is not a rounding difference; it is a sign that neither outlet is working from a document Mistral has actually released.
An acquisition for the team, not the customers
Pimento was founded in October 2022 by Florent Facq and Tomás Yany, initially as a moodboarding tool for creative teams, according to Dealroom. It later became generative-ad software built on open-source models including Stable Diffusion and Llama, turning campaign briefs and brand data into ad visuals and short animations for more than 180 brands. The startup had raised 3 million euros from Partech and Cygni Capital in December 2023.
Mistral is not keeping the product. Pimento's engineering and product staff are joining Mistral's team working on Vibe, the conversational assistant formerly called Le Chat, Facq said, and a source told L'Informé that Mistral prioritized "the skills of Pimento's developers" over the customer base the startup serves. Neither Mistral nor Pimento has said what happens to the 180 brands still using the ad tool. That is a contrast with Mistral's February purchase of Koyeb, when the company told Koyeb's customers directly that "nothing will change for you." Pimento's customers have received no equivalent statement.

A pattern, not a one-off
The deal closes out a run that started with Mistral's 3-billion-euro Series D, announced Sept. 8 and covered by The Terminal at the time. Three acquisitions in seven months, each small enough that Mistral does not have to disclose a price and each aimed at a different layer of the stack, reads less like opportunistic shopping and more like a deliberate build-by-buying strategy: Koyeb for the compute layer underneath Mistral's own models, Emmi AI for a vertical (industrial physics simulation) it could not have built in-house quickly, and now Pimento for a workflow, ad creative, that sits on top of Mistral's chat product rather than inside it. Databricks has run a similar playbook through 2026, including its own quiet purchase of the spreadsheet startup Row Zero.
What would confirm which price is closer to right is the filing Mistral has not made public: a disclosed transaction value, rather than a range assembled from documents two different outlets say they separately reviewed. Until Mistral or Pimento says more, the number to watch is not 3.8 million euros or 12.7 million euros, but whether either publication's sourcing holds up once, if ever, French corporate filings catch up to the announcement.
