Micro1 Reportedly Raises $100 Million at $4 Billion Valuation
Forbes cited two people familiar with the round; Micro1, which does not comment on unannounced deals, would not confirm the number itself.
Micro1 has raised more than $100 million at a $4 billion valuation, Forbes reported Sept. 23, citing two people familiar with the deal. That is eight times the $500 million valuation the AI-training-data startup carried a year earlier. Micro1 declined to comment, according to Forbes, and neither the company nor any investor has made the round official.
The prior mark is the one figure in this chain that is not in dispute. Micro1 closed a $35 million Series A at a $500 million valuation on Sept. 12, 2025, according to the company's own funding page. Everything since then, including the new $4 billion figure, rests on reporting Micro1 has not confirmed on its own newsroom page, which as of this week lists coverage of the Series A and of a later revenue milestone but nothing about a $4 billion valuation.
How micro1's revenue got here
Micro1 was an AI-recruiting business generating roughly $7 million a year when 2025 began, before founder Ali Ansari, then 24, repositioned it around supplying frontier AI labs with human-created training data: contracted doctors, lawyers, engineers and other domain experts who generate and evaluate the material large language models are trained on. Annual recurring revenue crossed $100 million by December 2025, according to Micro1's own newsroom archive, then reached a $500 million gross run rate by August 2026, TechCrunch reported — an increase TechCrunch pegged at eight months. Net of the roughly 30 to 40 percent Micro1 pays out to the contractors who create the data, TechCrunch put the run rate closer to $150 million to $200 million a year.

Against that trajectory, a $4 billion valuation implies roughly 5.7 times Micro1's reported $700 million run rate as of this month. Two larger rivals give a rough sense of where the category is pricing: Mercor reported a $2 billion gross annualized revenue figure this summer, and Handshake reported $1 billion earlier in 2026, both also supplying human-generated data to AI labs, according to TechCrunch's Aug. 20 report.
What Forbes could confirm, and what it couldn't
Forbes named two of Micro1's customers, Microsoft and Amazon, along with the robotics company 1X, and reported that two unnamed frontier AI labs and two unnamed co-founders of xAI are participating as investors in the new round. None of the four investors were confirmed by name, and Forbes did not report a lead investor. That leaves the round's structure, and whether it has actually closed rather than merely been discussed, unconfirmed by anyone Micro1 has authorized to speak for it.
TechCrunch's August report also surfaced a dispute over how Micro1 sources some of its data: critics cited in that story argued that selling similar datasets to multiple AI labs, including lower-cost synthetic data, helps rival labs, including Chinese developers, close the gap with the top U.S. models. Ansari told TechCrunch that Micro1 does not sell to Chinese AI developers, unlike some competitors in the category.
As with Gimlet Labs' $3 billion Series B valuation, the number that would let an outsider judge whether $4 billion is defensible is the one nobody involved will put on the record: a confirmed, audited revenue figure rather than a run rate relayed through unnamed sources. Snorkel AI, a data-labeling company in the same funding week whose $350 million round The Terminal covered, did disclose its valuation directly. Micro1's next test is whether it does the same once, or if ever, the round is confirmed on the record.
