Firecrawl Raises $75 Million, Launches Alexandria Data Platform
Smash Capital led the Series B, and Firecrawl says its own test of 845 tasks found the new index lifted AI agent answer accuracy 21 percent over built-in web tools.
Firecrawl raised $75 million in a Series B led by Smash Capital, the company said Tuesday, alongside the launch of a new product called Alexandria. Firecrawl did not disclose a valuation. Existing backers Y Combinator, Altos Ventures, Nexus Venture Partners, Freestyle and Offline Ventures also joined the round.
Caleb Peffer, Firecrawl's chief executive, wrote in the company's announcement that Alexandria is meant to let "AI agents find and build on what we know today and what we discover tomorrow, while the people who contribute that knowledge share in the value it creates." Peffer previously worked on two smaller products, Mendable and SideGuide, before founding the Los Angeles-based company.
What Alexandria actually indexes
Firecrawl's core product scrapes and structures web pages for AI agents to consume, a service the company says 1.5 million users now build with. Alexandria layers onto that a set of licensed third-party sources: tens of millions of scientific paper abstracts, code and documentation repositories, and what Firecrawl described as millions of monthly requests against Wikipedia's data. The pitch is a single API that spares developers from writing a custom connector for each source, an argument that puts Firecrawl in more direct competition with agent-memory tools like Vectorize's Hindsight, which targets a similar problem from the retrieval side rather than the scraping side.
The 21 percent figure comes from Firecrawl's own test
Firecrawl's launch post says that "across the verticals we tested, AI agents using Alexandria scored 21% higher on answer quality than those using built-in web tools," measured across 845 tasks. The company ran that test itself, on its own choice of verticals and its own definition of answer quality, and no independent party has reproduced the result. The figure should be read as a vendor benchmark, not an audited one, and Firecrawl's post does not name the built-in web tools used as the comparison.
| Metric (Firecrawl's own figures) | Value |
|---|---|
| Series B raised | $75 million |
| Users building with Firecrawl | 1.5 million |
| Tasks in Alexandria benchmark | 845 |
| Reported answer-quality lift | 21 percent |
What the company has not said
Firecrawl's post says it will spend part of the new capital on a self-service system that would let individual contributors and organizations earn money from the knowledge Alexandria indexes, a wager that paying contributors is a better model than the uncredited agent access described in Researchers Detail 700-Agent Swarm's Hack of Hugging Face. The company said the marketplace is coming, but it did not say when it opens, how contributors will be paid, or what share of licensing revenue they would keep. Those terms, not the 21 percent figure, are what will determine whether the marketplace attracts the people Firecrawl says it wants to pay.
Firecrawl also did not say what Alexandria costs beyond its existing scraping API pricing, or whether the 1.5 million user figure it cites counts free-tier signups alongside paying customers, a distinction that matters more to investors than the headline round size.
The next concrete test of Alexandria's usefulness will be whether Firecrawl publishes usage or retention numbers for the product, rather than the company's own single benchmark, once it has been live for a full quarter.
