Factory's $5 Billion Valuation Has No Revenue Number Behind It
Cognition's and Temporal's new valuations this month came with a specific revenue figure attached, and Factory's $200 million round did not.

Factory raised $200 million on Sept. 15 in a round that tripled its valuation to $5 billion from $1.5 billion five months earlier, and unlike two of the three other AI developer-tooling startups that raised nine- and ten-figure rounds in the same stretch, Factory's announcement did not include a revenue figure of any kind.
Blackstone, Khosla Ventures, Sequoia Capital and Insight Partners led the round, according to Factory's announcement, which named Nvidia, Blackstone, Royal Bank of Canada, Palo Alto Networks, Adobe and T-Mobile as customers running what the company calls self-improving software factories: systems in which agents plan tasks, open pull requests, review changes and coordinate across repositories without a developer opening a chat window for each step. Angel investors Marc Benioff, Brad Gerstner and former Formula One driver Nico Rosberg also participated.
Three deals, three revenue numbers, in the same three weeks
Two rivals disclosed exactly what Factory did not. Cognition said Sept. 8 that its Series E values the AI coding-agent company at $48 billion, up from $26 billion in May, and that its run-rate revenue rose from $492 million in May to nearly $900 million by September. Temporal said Sept. 14 that its $550 million Series E values the workflow-infrastructure company at $12.55 billion, up from $5 billion after a Series D seven months earlier, with an annualized revenue run rate above $250 million, up more than 200 percent year over year.
What CodeRabbit showed, and did not
A third company split the difference. CodeRabbit raised $143 million at a $1.5 billion valuation on Aug. 12, less than a year after a $60 million Series B, and said revenue had grown more than 5-fold year over year, PYMNTS reported. CodeRabbit did not say what dollar figure that growth rate applies to, so the 5-fold claim cannot be turned into a run-rate number the way Cognition's and Temporal's figures can. The company's announcement introduced what it calls Agentic Change Management, a system meant to govern code written by both people and agents. "AI code review only solves part of the problem," CodeRabbit said.
Who founded these four companies, and when
Factory was founded in 2023 by Chief Executive Matan Grinberg and co-founder Eno Reyes; the new round brings its total funding past $400 million, the company said. Cognition, maker of the Devin coding agent, has closed three funding rounds in 13 months: $400 million at a $10.2 billion valuation in September 2025, $1 billion at $26 billion in May 2026 and now $2 billion at $48 billion. Temporal, led by Chief Executive Samar Abbas, builds what it calls durable execution infrastructure, software that keeps long-running automated workflows consistent if a step fails partway through; it had more than 4,300 paying customers and had processed over 1.9 trillion actions on its cloud service in August, the company said.
The multiple Factory's silence would imply
Cognition's $48 billion valuation is roughly 53 times its disclosed run-rate revenue. Temporal's $12.55 billion is roughly 50 times its disclosed ARR. If Factory were priced at a similar multiple, its $5 billion valuation would imply run-rate revenue of roughly $94 million to $100 million, a number the company has not confirmed and that nothing in its announcement supports or contradicts.
| Company | Valuation | Disclosed revenue | Implied multiple |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cognition | $48 billion | ~$900 million run rate | ~53x |
| Temporal | $12.55 billion | $250 million-plus ARR | ~50x |
| CodeRabbit | $1.5 billion | Growth rate only, 5x | Not computable |
| Factory | $5 billion | None disclosed | Not computable |
The week's total, and what it says about the category
Across the four rounds, investors committed just under $2.9 billion to AI developer-tooling startups between Aug. 12 and Sept. 15. The combined valuation those four rounds assigned, Cognition's $48 billion, Temporal's $12.55 billion, Factory's $5 billion and CodeRabbit's $1.5 billion, adds up to $67.05 billion across companies that mostly did not exist as products before 2023. The pace echoes a broader run of AI infrastructure financings in the same window, including Google's open-source Agent Executor runtime, which passed 7,600 GitHub stars after its own launch, and GitHub and Bun's competing efforts to rewrite production codebases into Rust using AI coding agents.
Why the silence is not necessarily a warning sign
Withholding a revenue figure in a funding announcement is common, and it does not mean investors priced the round blind. Blackstone, Sequoia and Insight Partners conducted their own diligence on Factory's finances before wiring $200 million, even if none of that diligence became public. Cognition's and Temporal's figures are self-reported and unaudited too, so a company that discloses a number is not necessarily more truthful than one that withholds it, only more willing to have that number checked against its next round.
What would confirm or undercut the gap
The test is the next round. If Factory raises again at a materially higher multiple of whatever revenue figure eventually surfaces, that would support reading the September silence as a company confident enough in its growth curve not to need the number yet. If a future filing or acquisition disclosure puts Factory's revenue well under the $94 million implied by its peers' multiples, the September valuation will look like it was priced on customer names rather than revenue, the way Cognition's and Temporal's rounds were not.
