Eric Schmidt's Anthropic Stake Is Estimated at 1%, Worth About $20 Billion at $2 Trillion
Bloomberg's estimate is half of the 2 percent Reuters reports for chief executive Dario Amodei, and the Series A valuation behind it varies by $162 million depending on the source.

Eric Schmidt, the former Google chief executive, owns about 1 percent of Anthropic, according to a Bloomberg estimate that TechCrunch relayed on Oct. 20. At the $2 trillion valuation that the top end of market estimates puts on an Anthropic listing, that stake would be worth about $20 billion.
What the reported stakes imply
TechCrunch, citing Bloomberg, puts Schmidt's holding at roughly 1 percent and describes it as an estimate. It cites a Reuters report for chief executive Dario Amodei's 2 percent. Neither company's figure comes from Anthropic, which TechCrunch says did not immediately respond to its request for comment.
Multiplying the reported stakes by the $2 trillion figure gives a rough ladder. The valuation is a high-end market estimate, not a price anyone has paid, and the percentages are press estimates.
| Holder | Reported stake | Value at $2 trillion |
|---|---|---|
| Eric Schmidt | about 1% (Bloomberg estimate) | about $20 billion |
| Dario Amodei, chief executive | 2% (Reuters, via TechCrunch) | about $40 billion |
The $20 billion figure matches TechCrunch's own arithmetic, which adds up to that much to Schmidt's $57.5 billion net worth per Bloomberg. The $40 billion for Amodei is this article's multiplication, not a reported figure.
What a 2021 Series A turned into
Schmidt put "tens of millions of dollars" into Anthropic's 2021 Series A, TechCrunch reports. Dealroom's account of the round gives its size as $124 million, raised in May 2021 and led by Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn, with Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz, Schmidt, the Center for Emerging Risk Research and statistician James McClave among the backers.
The two sources disagree on what the company was worth then. TechCrunch gives $461 million, citing PitchBook data. Dealroom says Anthropic did not confirm a valuation and that Forge Global secondary-market data put the post-money figure at $623.11 million.
The multiple depends on which one you accept. From $461 million to $2 trillion is about 4,300 times. From $623.11 million it is about 3,200 times. Either way the company's value rose by more than three thousand times, which says little about Schmidt's return, because a 1 percent stake today is after every later round diluted the early backers.
The investor behind the stake
TechCrunch says Schmidt invests through Tomorrow Ventures, Innovation Endeavors Management and his family office, Hillspire. His other AI holdings it lists are Mistral, General Intuition and Reflection AI. He left Google as chief executive in 2011.
Ownership is one side of an Anthropic listing and governance is the other: the site has reported that the company's long-term benefit trust has picked four of seven directors ahead of a possible IPO.
TechCrunch says Anthropic is widely expected to list before the end of 2026. Its report cites no filing, so an offering date, a price range and a share count are all still missing, and those are the three figures that would turn a $20 billion estimate into a number.
