CedarDB Opens Its Cloud With 14 Employees and a €5.3 Million Seed
TechCrunch calls the launch limited availability; the company's own site says generally available.

CedarDB, a Munich database company with 14 employees, opened its managed cloud service on October 14, 2026, at TechCrunch Disrupt, and its own site now calls the product generally available while TechCrunch calls it limited availability. The company's last disclosed round is a €5.3 million seed announced in May 2025.
TechCrunch reports that CedarDB Cloud reached limited availability after beta testing with waitlist users. The CedarDB site says "CedarDB Cloud is live!" and offers a 30-day free trial, though one section of the same page says a hosted version is "on its way". A blog post dated October 14 is titled "CedarDB Cloud Is Now Generally Available".

A university project turned vendor
CedarDB is a spinout of the Technical University of Munich, built on Umbra, a research database designed to run quickly on modern hardware, TechCrunch says. Five Umbra researchers are co-founders: Moritz Sichert, Lukas Vogel, Philipp Fent, Dominik Durner and Christian Winter. Sichert is chief executive. The company's site says the team spent years developing Umbra before founding CedarDB.
The pitch is one engine for both transactions and analytics, which matters more as software agents query operational data directly. CedarDB implements the Postgres wire protocol, SQL grammar and system catalog, according to its site, so existing Postgres tools and drivers should work without rewrites.
| Edition | Where it runs | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Community | Your own infrastructure | Free |
| Enterprise | Your own infrastructure, with support | Not disclosed |
| Cloud | Managed by CedarDB | 30-day free trial |
The money against the headcount
The €5.3 million seed, about $6 million per TechCrunch, works out to roughly €379,000 per employee at 14 staff, the author's arithmetic. TechCrunch does not name the seed investors. Sichert says the next round will come once the company has more traction, and the company plans to serve its first cloud users with the current team.
No customers are named, and TechCrunch cites no benchmarks. The company promises faster performance without more CPUs, processing power or memory, a claim it has not supported with published figures in either source. Neither source gives pricing for Enterprise or Cloud.
The competitor with the larger balance sheet
TechCrunch notes that Databricks launched LTAP in June 2026 and framed it as a response to "the agentic era". That puts a 14-person company in the same category as a vendor with far more distribution. Postgres compatibility is the company's answer, which TechCrunch says keeps switching costs low.
Momentum so far comes from enterprises with large transaction histories that want to query them in natural language, per TechCrunch. For another early-stage round on this desk, see Origin's $20 million round, and for how funding terms get checked against claims, Ramp's reported valuation.
The next observable event is CedarDB's next round, which Sichert ties to traction. A named paying customer on the cloud service would be the first evidence of it.
