KDE Plasma 6.8 Ships on KDE's 30th Birthday as the First Release With No X11 Session
Anyone who logs into Plasma on X11 has to move to Wayland or to a fork. The release also adds CPU affinity to System Monitor and a beta theme engine for Dolphin and Kate.

KDE released Plasma 6.8 on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, the project's 30th anniversary. It is the first Plasma release that cannot start an X11 desktop session, according to The Register, which reported that Plasma 6.7 still offered the session as an optional install.
KDE's announcement words it more softly: "support for starting X11 sessions in Plasma is being retired." Applications that need X11 keep running through XWayland, and KDE says its own applications will keep supporting X11 for the foreseeable future.

The image above shows Plasma 5.22 from 2021, not 6.8.
What changes for someone who still logs into X11
The task that gets longer is logging in. Anyone who picks the X11 session at the login screen has three options: stay on Plasma 6.7, run X11 programs under XWayland, or move to a fork.
The Register named one fork for the last group, Sonic desktop, whose KWin fork, Sonic-win, keeps X11 support. It also listed Trinity Desktop Environment, whose latest release is 14.1.6 from April, as a route for people who want the KDE 3 lineage instead.
KDE's answer on the Wayland side is mostly in KWin. NVIDIA GPUs now use triple buffering by default, and HDR handling gains ICC colour profile support and the HLG transfer function.
The shorter list of things you can use today
The features most likely to change a daily routine are small and specific.
| Feature | What the announcement says | Status |
|---|---|---|
| CPU affinity | Pin heavy tasks to chosen CPUs inside System Monitor | Shipped |
| VRAM load | Shown as a percentage | Shipped |
| Dwell clicker | Sends a click when the pointer stops moving | Shipped |
| Remote desktop | Exclusive mode and two-way clipboard sync | Needs a supporting client |
| Union theme | Styles Qt Widgets apps such as Dolphin, Kate and Konsole | Beta, not default |
| kscreenctl | New command-line display tool | Shipped |
Union is the one that needs a step. To try it, install the union package, then pick "Breeze (Union)" under System Settings, Colors & Themes, Application Style, and restart the apps. KDE tells testers to report Union problems under the Union product on KDE Bugzilla. The Register quotes KDE saying support "remains preliminary."
The window-rules change fixes a long-standing visual gap. New rules add shadows, outlines and rounded corners to windows that draw their own title bars, and Plasma ships one such rule, for Steam.
How close the release was to clean
Linuxiac reported that only four Plasma 6.8 regression reports remained open in the final stabilization phase. Its list of late fixes includes a login hang tied to the Samsung Odyssey G60SF monitor's non-standard VCP ranges and a Menu Editor crash when deleting three or more items.
The Register said the second and final beta was 6.7.91 and that work on Plasma 6.9 had already begun. The same piece said a feature-length documentary from Cult.Repo accompanies the anniversary.
What is still unknown
The announcement lists no hardware or software requirements, so anyone on a distribution that ships Plasma should read its own release notes before upgrading. The Plasma 6.9 target of February 23, 2027 comes from pre-release coverage, not from the announcement.
Other open-source projects have had their own arguments over legacy paths this month, such as Gentoo's maintainer asking Python projects to drop uv-build and the QGIS vote on AI-written contributions.
