Jujutsu 0.46.0 Puts Extra Workspaces in Git Worktrees and Raises Its Git Floor to 2.42.0
The October 7 release also moves the Rust minimum to 1.97.1 and makes jj undo refuse cross-workspace operations without a flag.
Jujutsu 0.46.0, the Git-compatible version control tool run as jj, can now attach extra workspaces to Git worktrees. The release notes, posted on GitHub on October 7, also raise the minimum Git to 2.42.0 and the minimum Rust to 1.97.1.
The notes credit 29 contributors and name Stephen Jennings as the person who published the release. They list seven breaking changes.
What colocated workspaces change in jj 0.46.0
The headline line in the notes reads: "Jujutsu can now colocate workspaces besides the default one by creating Git worktrees." Colocation means a Git repository sits beside the .jj data so Git-only tools can read the same checkout.
jj workspace add now takes --colocate or --no-colocate, and a git.colocate setting picks the default. jj workspace forget removes the matching Git worktree. The jj git colocation status, enable and disable commands now work inside child workspaces.
A new jj workspace remove deletes a workspace and its directory, snapshotting working-copy state first. That order matters to anyone who has lost an uncommitted edit to a directory delete.
Breaking changes in 0.46.0
| Change | What 0.46.0 does |
|---|---|
| Git minimum | 2.42.0, up from 2.41.0 |
| Rust minimum (MSRV) | 1.97.1 |
jj bisect run | Runs consistency checks first; --trust-endpoints skips them |
jj split | One editor session for the descriptions of all split commits |
jj undo, jj redo | Refuse operations from another workspace without --allow-cross-workspace |
jj workspace list, root | Show all recorded paths, with warnings from root for unreachable ones |
Template List.get(), .first(), .last() | Return Option<T> instead of erroring out of bounds |
Why the Git floor is 2.42.0
The notes say the floor rises "because jj workspace add relies on a flag added in that version". They do not name the flag. Git's own 2.42.0 release notes list one new git worktree add option, --orphan, which creates a worktree on an orphaned branch, so which flag jj means is a guess the notes do not settle.
The practical edge falls on machines that ship Git 2.41.0 or older. Those need a newer Git before jj 0.46.0 will run its workspace commands.
Windows and ignore-file fixes in #8661, #2289 and #7161
On Windows, jj no longer hangs when a subprocess such as ssh needs user input, because subprocesses now inherit the terminal's console. Turning colocation on or off no longer fails with an access error when the Git repository has pack files (#8661).
Ignore handling changed in two places. .gitignore rules now apply even to files excluded by sparse patterns, so ignored files can no longer become tracked (#2289). In-tree .gitignore files reached through symlinks are skipped, matching Git (#7161), while $GIT_DIR/info/exclude and core.excludesFile still follow symlinks.
What to check before upgrading to 0.46.0
Scripts that call jj undo or jj redo across workspaces will now stop with a refusal unless they pass the new flag. Scripts that parse jj workspace list output will see rows they did not see before, since unreachable paths are no longer hidden.
Anyone building jj from source needs Rust 1.97.1 or newer. The notes do not give a date for the next release.
