iPadOS 27 Gives the AirPlay Screen to Whichever App You Tapped Last, and Keynote Quits the Show
An educator's Feedback report, FB23615646, describes presenter notes and unrevealed poll results appearing on a classroom screen. Apple's Keynote guide documents a presenter display for notes, a timer and a next-slide preview.

On iPadOS 27, tapping any window other than the presenting app while AirPlaying to a screen makes the external display show the whole iPad, according to educator Teddy Svoronos in a blog post dated October 19. He wrote that it exposes private notes and unrevealed poll results to the audience, and that the behaviour persists in the latest betas.
The post names no Apple response. Svoronos filed Apple Feedback report FB23615646 and asked readers to do the same.
What happens in each app
Svoronos writes handouts on his iPad, projects them over AirPlay, and uses the same iPad to control PowerPoint on a Mac, read private notes and preview poll results. His reproduction needs multiple windows open, with Stage Manager on or off. Tap anything but the presenting app and the display snaps to the full screen.
| App | What he reports happens |
|---|---|
| Keynote | The presentation exits entirely |
| PowerPoint | The app enters a limbo state; the presentation has to be restarted |
| GoodNotes | Presenter view returns when you tap back into the app |
He links a Reddit post showing the GoodNotes behaviour. That post was not fetched for this story, so the table rests on his account alone.
He says he discussed the issue on the Mac Power Users podcast in early September, which places the report weeks before the post.
What Apple documents
Apple's Keynote guide for iPad says: "You can set the presenter display to show presenter notes, a timer, or a preview of the next slide." That is the arrangement Svoronos relies on, with the audience seeing slides and the presenter seeing notes.
The same guide says: "If you’re using Apple TV as an external display, the presenter display is not visible." That limit is documented for Apple TV, so it is a separate matter from the iPadOS 27 behaviour. The guide carries a 2026 copyright line but no iPadOS 27 changes.
Svoronos's own reading is that iPadOS 26 made it confusing to tell which app controlled the external display. In his account, iPadOS 27 resolved that by giving control to the last app tapped, which he considers worse. He proposes that a presenting app keep the display until the presentation stops, the document closes or the app quits.
What the Hacker News thread adds
The post reached 482 points and 246 comments on Hacker News on October 20, according to the site's search API. The comments do not supply a build number or an Apple document, and they split on intent.
User eddieroger wrote: "It's not clear if the way it worked before was the way Apple intended or not." User compiler-guy wrote: "Someone made a design decision that broke some use cases." One commenter, tkdb, said Keynote was his go-to and he is moving to self-contained HTML. Another, thraway3837, suggested a Mac-style choice of which window goes to the external display.
No workaround for iPadOS 27 itself appears in the post or the part of the thread that was read.
What it costs the person presenting
The practical failure is a mid-talk tap. A presenter who opens a second window to check notes or poll results risks showing it, or in Keynote ending the show. Svoronos says he cannot recommend iPadOS 27 to anyone who uses an iPad to teach or present.
Other vendor-side limits that owners cannot easily change are covered in Volkswagen's 80 percent charge cap for the ID.4, and a release that removes support is covered in OpenBSD 8.0 dropping Loongson.
The next thing to watch is whether Apple answers FB23615646 or changes the behaviour in a beta. Svoronos said he will update his post if anything changes.
