Impeccable's Design Detector Runs Without a Model, but Its Open Issues Show Gaps Outside .html
Paul Bakaus's design skill for coding agents ships 61 deterministic rules you can run from the command line. The bug tracker says where they are least reliable.
Impeccable, a design skill for AI coding agents written by Paul Bakaus, ships a command-line detector that flags generic interface design without calling a model. The repository's README describes "one skill, 24 commands, live browser iteration, and 61 deterministic detector rules." Its issue tracker, read on Oct. 5, shows where those rules are least dependable.
What Impeccable installs
The project is Apache 2.0 licensed and showed 76.3k stars when the GitHub page was read. Running npx impeccable install sets up a single skill, and every command is then invoked as /impeccable <command>. Examples in the README include audit, critique, polish, distill, animate and shape.
The README lists sixteen supported harnesses, among them Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, Codex CLI, OpenCode and Pi. A design hook installs on Claude Code, Copilot, Codex, Cursor and Grok Build. Live mode, which iterates in the browser, needs a local development environment and does not run against production sites.
The detector needs no agent
The part that differs from most agent skills is npx impeccable detect. The README says it scans a directory, a file or a URL without an AI harness or an API key. A binary downloads once into ~/.impeccable/bin/.
The rules target patterns the README names as overused fonts, purple gradients and bounce easing, plus accessibility problems. A third-party guide on yeou.dev adds default Inter typography, nested cards, gray text on colored backgrounds and rounded icon tiles above headings. That guide says Impeccable builds on Anthropic's frontend-design skill.
The guide also counts 23 commands and 58 rules. The README now says 24 and 61, so the project has added rules since that guide was written. It is undated in the text retrieved.
Where the tracker says it breaks
Five of the ten newest open issues concern the detector or the code the live mode rewrites. They are small, specific and recent.
| Issue | Opened | Problem as titled |
|---|---|---|
| #939 | Oct. 5 | load_raster serves a stale sibling PNG cache for an edited WebP or JPEG comp |
| #884 | Sept. 29 | .astro, .jsx, .svelte and .vue scans miss rules that .html catches |
| #881 | Sept. 29 | Analytic gradient plus alpha contrast composites incorrectly |
| #878 | Sept. 29 | Claude Code plugin hooks.json throws ParserErrors on Windows |
| #875 | Sept. 28 | live-wrap cannot find multi-line JSX elements, and its fallback can delete elements |
Take issue #884. A team with a Vue or Svelte front end runs the detector expecting the same findings an HTML prototype gets, and per the issue title it does not. A clean report there means less than it appears to.
Issue #875 is the one to read before using live mode on a React codebase. Its title says the fallback can delete elements, so commit first.
Stars are not adoption
The repository gained 1,171 stars in a day, according to the lead sheet this desk pulled on Oct. 5. Stars measure interest. The tracker holds 10 recent issues in under two weeks, which shows active use, though not how many people run it on work that ships.
The detector is also a narrower claim than the marketing line "design language" suggests. Sixty-one fixed rules catch the tells of generated interfaces. They cannot say whether a layout serves its users. Bakaus's own tracker has an open question on whether hard offset shadows deserve a check (#929), which shows how contested the rule list still is.
Compare other agent repos that trended on stars alone, such as the Ponytail ruleset, where the benchmark behind the attention was four runs on one repository. Impeccable at least offers something a reader can run and falsify without a model. Teams adopting open-source skills also face the policy questions raised in System76's COSMIC pull request template.
The next thing to watch is whether the .jsx and .vue gap in #884 closes. It will show in the tracker.
