Deno's Whole Team Joins Cloudflare, and the Runtime Gets One More Year
Ryan Dahl's post says Deno Deploy shuts down in six months and development of the open-source runtime ends after 12, while the code stays on GitHub.

Deno Land is folding into Cloudflare. In a post dated Oct. 9, Deno creator Ryan Dahl wrote that "the entire Deno team is joining Cloudflare," that Cloudflare will fund the Deno runtime for one more year, and that "after that year we will end our development of the Deno runtime."
The companies published two posts the same day: Dahl's on the Deno blog and a joint one on the Cloudflare blog. Neither discloses a price or says whether the deal is an acquisition. Cloudflare's post is signed by Dahl, listed as Senior Principal Engineer, and by Kenton Varda, a Distinguished Engineer at Cloudflare.
What the deadlines are
The Deno post gives two clocks and no calendar dates for either. Counted from Oct. 9, six months lands in April 2027 and 12 months in October 2027.
| Product | What Dahl's post says | Counted from Oct. 9, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Deno Deploy | Keeps operating for six months, then shuts down | About April 2027 |
| Deno runtime | Monthly bug-fix and security releases for one year, then development ends | About October 2027 |
| JSR | Keeps operating, infrastructure moves to Cloudflare | No end date given |
| rusty_v8 | Cloudflare keeps supporting it and works on integrating it into workerd | No end date given |
Paying Deploy customers get "migration support" to Cloudflare Workers. The post says nothing about Fresh, Deno's web framework, and nothing about what Deno Land's other paid products become.

What Cloudflare says it is building
Varda's half of the Cloudflare post is about something else entirely: self-hosting. Cloudflare is merging workerd, its open-source Workers runtime, with celld, a Rust implementation of Workers and Durable Objects. Dahl describes celld as "one binary, written in Rust, with object storage as its only external service dependency."
The gap being closed is real. Varda says workerd's Durable Objects support is limited to a single instance, fine for local testing and no use for scale, because Cloudflare's production routing is built for hundreds of locations and leans on services a self-hoster does not have. The workerd repository is Apache-2.0 licensed with 8.8k stars.
Dahl and Bert Belder will lead the effort to make self-hosted workerd "a first-class way to build and run apps." Varda says celld shipped in August and that more announcements are coming "in the coming months." The post gives no dates.
What a Deno user does now
The Deno repository is MIT licensed and shows 108.7k stars. Dahl writes that "Deno will remain open source, and we welcome others who want to continue its development." That is an invitation, not a successor: the post names no maintainer, foundation or fork.
For someone running scripts, the one-year window is long enough to finish a quarter's work. For someone on Deno Deploy, the six-month window is a migration, and the only named destination is Cloudflare Workers. We covered the platform's Python Workers general release and its cf command-line tool earlier.
The reaction on Hacker News, 656 points and 346 comments when fetched, centred on the same line. A commenter named dkersten called Deno effectively defunct with its team moving; others, including redox99 and matesz, said moving to Node or Bun is a small job. flohofwoe wrote that Node still lacks Deno's direct npm: imports, and tech234a said yt-dlp uses Deno as its preferred JavaScript runtime. These are commenters, not confirmed facts about either project.

The 2025 promise this replaces
In May 2025 Dahl answered a critical post about Deno's health. InfoWorld reported that he wrote Deno Deploy had gone from 25 regions at its 2021 launch to 35 and then down to six, and that "we're not winding down" but "winding up."
Sixteen months later the same founder is posting a runtime end date. The October post does not mention the earlier statement or explain what changed.
The next concrete marker is the first monthly security release Cloudflare commits to. The post names no date for it.
