ArtCraft Gained 2,103 Stars in a Day. Its Licence Says Personal Use Only
The AI image and video studio calls itself open source on its website, but the licence file on GitHub calls itself a work in progress and GitHub declines to name it.

ArtCraft, a desktop studio for AI image and video generation, gained 2,103 GitHub stars in a day, putting it eighth on GitHub's trending page. Its website calls it an "open-source studio". The licence file in the repository grants use for "private personal purposes" and bans building a competing product.
The repository, storytold/artcraft, shows 8,207 stars and 1,171 forks in GitHub's API. The same record lists its licence as "Other" with the identifier NOASSERTION, GitHub's way of saying it could not match the text to a known licence.

What the licence file says
The LICENSE.md describes itself as the ArtCraft License, a work-in-progress "fair source" licence, and warns that it is not yet a complete legal licence. The grants are short. "You do not have to pay us to use ArtCraft. It's free." Users may "back up, copy, modify, compile, and use the code for your own private personal purposes." And: "Generated assets are yours."
The limits are as plain. "You cannot sell the ArtCraft software commercially (eg. as your own software)." "You cannot use the ArtCraft code to develop a competing business or product." Forks may not remove "ArtCraft community, donation links, or paid model services", and the name, logo and mascot characters need permission for promotion.
The file does not say what a freelancer or a studio may do with the software for client work, because the only grant is for private personal use. It states an intention, not a term, that if the business ends the software moves to an OSI-approved open source licence.
Open source, fair source, or neither
Three documents use three vocabularies. The project website describes "an open-source studio for controllable AI image and video creation". The README uses neither "open source" nor "fair source" and only links to the licence. The licence file says fair source.
Fair Source is a real movement with its own site. Fair.io describes it as "an alternative to closed source, allowing you to safely share access to your core products." The page this report read did not set out which licences qualify, so whether the ArtCraft text meets that bar is not something this report can say.
What the studio actually runs
The README lists a 62-model catalogue: 16 image, 25 video, 5 music and sound, 11 3D mesh and 5 world and Gaussian-splat models. The providers in its support table are ArtCraft, Grok, Midjourney, Sora and World Labs. The README does not say whether generation runs locally. Because the catalogue is built from named third-party services, it appears to run through external services, but that is an inference.
| Catalogue entry | Count in the README |
|---|---|
| Image models | 16 |
| Video models | 25 |
| Music and sound | 5 |
| 3D meshes | 11 |
| Worlds and Gaussian splats | 5 |
Nine entries carry the README's "Currently disabled" mark, among them Veo 3, Sora 2, Sora 2 Pro and four Kling variants. Two MiniMax models are marked restricted and unavailable in the desktop app. Whoever installs it for Sora 2 will find the entry switched off.
The website says "No subscription required" and "No aggregator middleman", and links a pricing page this report did not read. The licence, though, names "paid model services" as something forks must keep, which suggests the revenue sits there.
Open issue #1990 reports that the Windows MSI installer "appears to crash silently". The repository was created on March 31, 2022, and was last pushed on October 7, 2026.
Stars measure interest on one day, not use. For comparison, the site's reports on the LTX 2.5 licence and the VoiceStudio trending licence found the same gap between a trending repository and the right to use it commercially.
What would settle it
The ArtCraft License says it is incomplete. A finished text, or a written answer on commercial use, is the next thing to watch for in storytold/artcraft, whose last push was on October 7, 2026.
