Apple's iCloud Nag Won't Clear, Even With Storage to Spare
9to5Mac traced a stuck red Settings badge to iOS 27, 27.2 and 26.7, the same screen where TechRadar counted four other promotions that resist being dismissed.

Apple's Settings app has been showing some iPhone owners a red notification badge urging them to "Activate iCloud Storage," and tapping it does not make it go away, 9to5Mac EU Contributing Editor Benjamin Mayo wrote Sept. 22. The badge reappears even on accounts already paying for a 2-terabyte Apple One family plan, well above what the prompt is nominally trying to sell.
Mayo's report ties the bug to iOS 27, iOS 27.2 and iOS 26.7. It does not identify a single trigger. Apple's own support guidance, which the article cites rather than a company statement, recommends signing out of the Media & Purchases account in Settings and signing back in, a workaround some users report clears the badge and others report does not. Apple has not said how many iPhones are affected or why a device with unused storage produces a storage-upsell prompt at all.
Where else Apple's prompts share the same screen
The stuck badge is not the only promotional element competing for space in iOS 27's Settings app. TechRadar contributor Alex Blake documented a wider pattern the same week: banners for iCloud+ storage upgrades, an Apple Music free trial, an Apple TV+ free trial and AppleCare+ renewal reminders, several without a working way to dismiss them for good.
| Promotion | Where it appears | How to clear it |
|---|---|---|
| iCloud storage badge | Red badge on the Settings app icon | Often does not clear; Apple Support suggests signing out of Media & Purchases and back in |
| Apple Music free trial | Banner inside Settings | Expires on its own, which can take weeks |
| Apple TV+ free trial | Banner inside Settings | Expires on its own or after subscribing |
| AppleCare+ renewal reminder | Persistent banner inside Settings | No consistent dismiss button, per TechRadar |
Blake quoted one Reddit poster writing, "I wish Apple would just stop that crap," among several similar complaints TechRadar gathered from social media over the days before publication. TechRadar's reporting found that some of the banners carry a dismiss option that does not consistently work, leaving the badge or banner in place regardless of what the user selects.
What Apple has said, and not said
Neither report includes a comment from Apple explaining the badge or the broader pattern. Mayo's article draws a distinction between the two: Apple has used Settings to promote trials and AppleCare+ before, but he wrote that this particular notification "appears to simply be a mistake rather than some underhand way to shove an iCloud upsell in front of customers." That reading rests on the badge showing up for users who already have ample storage, which would make little commercial sense as a deliberate upsell.
The episode follows macOS 27's removal of a long-standing Apple Intelligence toggle from System Settings, another case this month of Apple changing what a settings screen lets a user turn off without a public changelog entry. Not every platform vendor is adding friction to a configuration screen this month: OpenAI simplified its own default by dropping a cache-key requirement that GPT-6 developers previously had to set by hand.
Apple has not published a fix timeline for the iCloud badge. Until it does, the sign-out-and-back-in workaround is the only documented option, and it does not work for everyone who has tried it.
