Anthropic Folds Claude Cowork Into Chat, Adds Docs and Slides

Anthropic began merging Claude Cowork into its main chat interface on Sept. 16, ending the separate workspace it built for longer, multi-step tasks. In a post on its blog, the company said people using Claude had to decide whether a task belonged in ordinary chat or in Cowork, and that work started in one did not carry into the other.

Claude now assesses what a task needs on its own rather than routing people to a different surface. Cowork's abilities, and those of Claude Design, are available from any conversation, carrying over the context, skills and connectors a user already has set up, according to the announcement.

Pro and Max go first, Enterprise goes last

The rollout starts with Pro and Max subscribers on web, desktop and mobile "over the coming weeks," Anthropic said. Team and Free plans get the same change afterward; the company did not say when. Enterprise administrators get at least 30 days' notice before anything changes for their organizations.

Docs and Slides launch in beta

Claude Docs and Claude Slides both launched Sept. 16 in beta on paid plans. Docs turns a conversation into an editable, collaborative document; Slides drafts a presentation that can be edited in place, presented from inside Claude, or downloaded as a PowerPoint or PDF file. Claude Design, previously a separate tool, now works inside ordinary conversations too, while still standing alone for anyone who wants it that way.

Cat Wu, who leads product for Claude Code and Cowork, has said since March that Cowork's advantage over an ordinary chatbot was its ability to keep working on a task without a person watching every step, according to Sources, a newsletter written by Alex Heath.

Krieger points at a cloud-based Cowork

Mike Krieger, who ran product across Anthropic before moving to its Labs group, described the next step in Cowork's evolution as cutting the cord to a running laptop. He said he uses Claude Code Remote to kick off a coding task while away from his computer and come back to a finished pull request, adding: "you can imagine similar things for Cowork."

The merge announcement frames the change as removing a choice rather than removing a capability, a distinction that matters for the ai agents push Anthropic has been making elsewhere in the product, and for how it has described the risk of the systems it ships doing more without a person watching each step.

What Anthropic left unsaid

The company gave no date for when Team and Free subscribers get the change, and its announcement does not say what becomes of a Cowork session's history once the two interfaces combine. Enterprise customers, bound by the 30-day notice clause, will be the last to find out.
