Tenstorrent Raises $1.5 Billion at $6.2 Billion, 24 Percent Above Reported Takeover Interest
Neither TechCrunch nor BetaKit reports a Galaxy server spec, price, customer or revenue figure for the chip maker's Series E.

Tenstorrent, the chip startup led by chief executive Jim Keller, raised $1.5 billion in a Series E at a $6.2 billion post-money valuation, reported on Oct. 19. The valuation is 24 percent above the roughly $5 billion Bloomberg said Intel and Qualcomm had been prepared to pay about five months earlier.
Trace Capital, a new firm launched by Quiet Capital co-founder Ben Mahdavi, and Innovation X led the round, TechCrunch reported. Cadence Ventures, Eclipse, Fidelity, SanDisk and T. Rowe Price also invested. BetaKit reports that the valuation is more than double the $2.6 billion of the Series D, which raised nearly $700 million in late 2024.

What the money is for
BetaKit says the capital goes to volume manufacturing of Galaxy servers, follow-on hardware and intellectual property, and hiring. TechCrunch describes the target as chips for serving open-weight models, meaning models whose trained weights anyone can download, and for video generation. Galaxy has shipped commercially since the Series D, per BetaKit.
Keller told Bloomberg, as relayed by TechCrunch, that Tenstorrent chose to stay independent and raise capital after a May demonstration of Galaxy servers running DeepSeek models. BetaKit quotes him: "We built one architecture and sell it at every size."

What is not in either report
The number that matters here is not the valuation but the denominator under it, and neither outlet gives one. TechCrunch's article names Galaxy servers as the only product and provides no chip specification, no price and no customer. BetaKit adds no other chip name. Neither reports revenue, units shipped or Galaxy's memory bandwidth, the figures an inference buyer compares first.
BetaKit says Tenstorrent did not disclose total funding to date or whether the Series E includes secondary capital, meaning shares sold by existing holders. That matters for the arithmetic. If all $1.5 billion is new money, investors bought about 24 percent of the company ($1.5 billion over $6.2 billion); if part is secondary, the company received less than $1.5 billion. The 24 percent figure is The Terminal's calculation under the first assumption.
| Item | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Series E | $1.5 billion at $6.2 billion post-money | TechCrunch, BetaKit |
| Series D | Nearly $700 million at $2.6 billion, late 2024 | BetaKit |
| Reported takeover interest | Up to about $5 billion | Bloomberg, via TechCrunch |
| Employees | About 1,000, 200 in Toronto | BetaKit |
BetaKit also reports that Tenstorrent cut 7.5 percent of its workforce while shifting from enterprise to developer sales, and moved its headquarters to Santa Clara, California, in 2023. Founded in Toronto in 2016, it counts Export Development Canada and Georgian among existing backers.
Where the bet is exposed
A chip built for open-weight models rises or falls with which open weights are popular. DeepSeek's V4.1-Flash-1017 claimed 42.3 on Terminal-Bench 4.0 while Vals AI measured 31.8, which shows how fast a vendor's headline for an open model can move against an outside measurement. Servers also depend on the facilities around them, as the power event in Google Cloud's London europe-west2-b zone covered here showed.
TechCrunch separately reported that Etched, another inference chip maker, was fielding funding offers at valuations of $40 billion or more. Against that, $6.2 billion for a company with about 1,000 employees is $6.2 million a head, and it is the only number in either report that lets a reader compare Tenstorrent with anyone.
What would change this read is a Galaxy price per server and a disclosed order book. Neither TechCrunch nor BetaKit reports that Tenstorrent has published either.
