Rivian's Bigger EDV 700 Pack Adds 29% Energy; the AWD Version Gives Back 33 Miles
EPA certification documents list 129 kWh usable against 100 kWh before. Rivian advertises 30% more range, but its own AWD configuration lands below that figure on the unadjusted test.

Rivian's 2027 EDV 700 delivery van carries a 129 kWh usable battery, up from 100 kWh, according to EPA certification documents reported by Electrek. Rivian confirmed in its Q3 2026 shareholder presentation that deliveries of the new variants began in early October, Electrek said.
The pack is lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. The larger battery and a new dual-motor all-wheel-drive version are the first major hardware upgrade to the van since production began in 2021, per Electrek. Only the EDV 700, with 652 cubic feet of cargo space, gets them. The EDV 500 keeps its existing pack and front-wheel drive.

The EPA figures against Rivian's 30%
Rivian says the bigger pack and AWD configuration offer a 30% range increase. The EPA unadjusted laboratory numbers in Electrek's report show a spread: 261.7 miles for the current front-wheel-drive EDV 700, 355.5 miles for the new FWD (+36%) and 322.25 miles for the new AWD (+23%).
So the 30% is neither variant's figure. The FWD version beats it by 6 points and the AWD version misses it by 7. Rivian's headline sits between the two, and the AWD van, the one aimed at harder routes, gives back about 33 miles against the FWD version on the same 129 kWh.
- Current EDV 700 (FWD, 100 kWh)261.7 miles
- New EDV 700 AWD (129 kWh)322.25 miles
- New EDV 700 FWD (129 kWh)355.5 miles

What the range numbers do not say
The number that matters here is not the unadjusted range but the adjusted one a route planner would use. Electrek estimates about 208 miles for the new FWD van and roughly 195 to 200 miles for the AWD version. Those are Electrek's estimates, not EPA or Rivian figures. Electrek also reports that Rivian rates the current 700 at "up to 160 miles".
Energy per mile moves the same way. Dividing usable energy by unadjusted range (our arithmetic, not a published efficiency rating) gives about 0.38 kWh a mile for the current van, 0.36 for the new FWD and 0.40 for the new AWD. The second motor costs roughly 10% in efficiency on that test.
| Variant | Usable battery | EPA unadjusted range |
|---|---|---|
| Current EDV 700 FWD | 100 kWh | 261.7 miles |
| New EDV 700 FWD | 129 kWh | 355.5 miles |
| New EDV 700 AWD | 129 kWh | 322.25 miles |
Rivian says the new variants are "specifically designed to expand route coverage into more rural networks." Electrek's report does not state a price for either.
Where the van sits in Rivian's quarter
Rivian's Q3 2026 results show 19,248 deliveries, up 46% from 13,201 a year earlier, with R2 the best-selling Rivian vehicle by volume, ahead of both R1 and the commercial van. A higher mix of R2 and van deliveries lowered the automotive average selling price. The filing gives no van unit count.
Amazon remains the main customer, per Electrek, which also saw a van in Walmart+ livery; neither company has announced a deal. Electrek adds that GM ended BrightDrop van production in Ontario and Canoo went bankrupt, which leaves Ford's E-Transit as the main full-size electric alternative in the U.S.
For battery chemistry beyond LFP, see our report on CATL's solid-state cell, whose status has not changed since 2024. Amazon's hardware bets also include satellites, covered in our report on its FCC approval.
Rivian's updated 2026 guidance is 67,000 to 70,000 deliveries. With 41,807 delivered through September, Electrek calculated it needs between 25,193 and 28,193 in Q4. Any van volumes will show up in those totals only if Rivian chooses to break them out.
