BYD's Yangwang U9 Xtreme Hits 503.17 km/h, 6.95 km/h Above Its Own Record
The FIA recognised a single-direction run on a closed 10 km stretch of Abu Dhabi's E11; the car has four 555 kW motors.

BYD's Yangwang U9 Xtreme reached 503.17 km/h (312.66 mph) on Abu Dhabi's E11 highway on November 1, the first production car past 500 km/h, according to the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, which recognised the run on November 6. The driver was Marc Basseng, a German racing driver.
The number that matters here is not 503 but 6.95: the margin, in km/h, over the 496.22 km/h the same car set at Germany's ATP Papenburg in September 2025.
What the run was, and was not
Authorities closed a 10 km section of Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed International Road in the Al Dhafra region, which included a 7 km straight, the FIA said. The run was in a single direction. Guinness World Records lists two titles for it, highest speed for a production car and for an electric production car, and both are for a single-direction run, Electrek reported. Neither source says how the speed was measured.
Two runs on October 31 reached 490 km/h, the FIA said, and two more followed on November 1. Electrek adds that the record came on the second day after changes to the rear wing, damping and tyre pressures. This was a tuned attempt with a record-spec car, not a stock one.

The hardware behind the figure
Electrek lists four electric motors rated at 555 kW each, 2,220 kW combined, which BYD rounds to more than 3,000 PS. Each motor turns up to 30,000 rpm on a 1,200-volt architecture. The battery is a track-grade version of BYD's Blade Battery using LFP cells, and the tyres are bespoke semi-slicks developed with Giti Tire. Electrek says it is unclear whether customer cars will get them.

The photograph shows a standard U9 on a public street, not the record car. Electrek reports 30 Xtreme units were built, at about $3 million each. That price is Electrek's figure and BYD's own price list is not among the sources.
Why 7 km/h is harder than it sounds
Aerodynamic drag power rises with the cube of speed. Raising the top speed from 496.22 to 503.17 km/h is a 1.4% increase, and the cube of that ratio is about 1.043, so the car needed roughly 4.3% more power at the wheels to hold the higher speed, assuming the same drag coefficient and air density. That is my arithmetic, not a figure from either source; the rear-wing change Electrek mentions would alter the drag coefficient, so treat it as a floor on the effort.
Before the U9 Xtreme, the mark belonged to the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ at 490.48 km/h in 2019, according to Electrek. The U9 Xtreme first passed it in September 2025 and has now added 12.69 km/h to Bugatti's figure.
What is still open
The 500 km/h claim is a one-way run on a closed road section with a record-spec setup. The FIA statement does not name an official or specify the timing method, and it does not report an opposite-direction run. Whether any of the 30 cars will carry the record tyres is unconfirmed. For how battery and chemistry choices play out in commercial vehicles, see our report on Electrovaya and Janus Electric's battery-swap trucks; for a different test of electric hardware under scrutiny, see Tesla's Cybercab response to NHTSA.
What would change my read: a run in the opposite direction. With both directions on record, the result could be averaged and compared with other records on the same basis; with one direction, it cannot.
