BYD's Larger Seagull Takes Pre-Orders With a 95 kW Motor and No Price, Battery or Range
The second-generation car is 425 mm longer than the $10,000 original; what BYD has published comes from a ministry filing, not from BYD.

BYD opened blind pre-orders for the second-generation Seagull on October 9, a car that is 425 mm longer and carries a 95 kW motor, up from 55 kW, but BYD has published no price, battery capacity or range.
Electrek's Peter Johnson reported the pre-orders, announced on Weibo by Zhang Zhuo, general manager of BYD's Ocean series. Electrek wrote that BYD has not confirmed battery specifications or other details. The specifications below come from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) catalogue, as reported by CnEVPost.

What the filing shows
CnEVPost reported that the new Seagull appeared in the MIIT catalogue batch released July 10, 2026. Electrek dates the filing to August; the two reports disagree, and we have not seen the catalogue itself. The dimensions agree: 4,205 mm long, 1,810 mm wide, 1,570 mm high, on a 2,650 mm wheelbase.
| Spec | Current Seagull | New Seagull |
|---|---|---|
| Length | about 3,780 mm | 4,205 mm |
| Wheelbase | about 2,500 mm | 2,650 mm |
| Motor peak | 55 kW | 95 kW |
| Battery | not in sources | LFP, capacity unpublished |
The current-model lengths are derived by CnEVPost and by Electrek from the 425 mm and 150 mm differences, so treat them as arithmetic, not measurements. The motor moves from the front to the rear, according to Electrek, which changes the layout rather than just the power.

Weight, speed and sensors
Two versions are listed, both five-seat battery-electric cars with LFP batteries and a 150 km/h top speed. The base version has a curb weight of 1,180 kg; the other weighs 1,255 kg and can optionally add LiDAR plus front, rear and side radar, CnEVPost reported.
That sensor option matters for the price. CnEVPost notes the current Seagull was the first A00-class car in China to offer LiDAR, and its God's Eye B version starts at 90,900 yuan ($13,410). The entry price quoted by Electrek for the current Seagull is 69,900 yuan, about $10,000. A bigger car with a heavier motor and an optional sensor package will not hold the same price, but BYD has not said where it lands.
The price gap that decides the story
Electrek compares the baseline against the cheapest US car cited, the 2026 Hyundai Venue at just over $20,000, and against BYD's Dolphin Surf in Europe at €22,900 (about $25,000). The Seagull has sold over 212,000 units through August, Electrek wrote, citing CleanTechnica, which would make it the sixth-best-selling EV worldwide. That sales figure is a single-source number relayed through Electrek.
The new car is expected on sale by the end of 2026 in China first. Electrek says a larger overseas version is expected later, likely as a Dolphin Surf or Dolphin Mini variant. That is Electrek's expectation and not a BYD announcement.
What is missing
Range and battery size are the two numbers a buyer needs, and neither is out. Electrek reports that BYD's Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging are expected on higher trims but are unconfirmed. Battery risk is not hypothetical in this market: Volkswagen's recall of 22,524 ID.4s caps charging at 80% while the cause is still unknown. And cell cost is the lever behind both cars and grid storage, as the Wood Mackenzie finding on four-hour batteries shows.
The next number to watch is the first price list, expected before sales start by the end of 2026.
