OpenAI Buys Camera Startup Glass Imaging for $300 Million
The Wall Street Journal reported the deal Sept. 14, extending OpenAI's push into consumer hardware after its $6.5 billion purchase of Jony Ive's io Products.
OpenAI has agreed to buy Glass Imaging, a computational-photography startup, for more than $300 million, the Wall Street Journal reported Sept. 14.
TechCrunch and SiliconANGLE confirmed the Journal's reporting the same day, both citing the more-than-$300-million figure. Neither OpenAI nor Glass Imaging has commented publicly on the deal. TechCrunch said OpenAI did not respond to its request for comment.
What GlassAI does to a photo
Glass Imaging's product is GlassAI, a neural image signal processor trained on the raw sensor output of one specific camera module rather than a generic pipeline. Instead of running demosaicing, denoising, deblurring and multi-frame fusion as separate steps, GlassAI performs all four in a single pass and models the optical behavior, including the point spread function, of the individual lens, according to a PetaPixel report published June 1.
The technology already ships. Honor's 600-series phone uses a crop of its 200-megapixel main camera for zoom instead of a dedicated telephoto lens, then runs that crop through GlassAI to recover detail. "We're honored to partner with Honor and to have our Neural ISP technology featured in the 600 series," Glass Imaging chief executive Ziv Attar told PetaPixel. As phone pixels shrank from 0.75 micrometers to 0.35 micrometers, the company's neural restoration lifted resolution, measured by the MTF50 sharpness metric, by more than 50 percent, machine-learning team member Shivansh Rao told PetaPixel.
Two Apple engineers who built Portrait Mode
Attar and chief technology officer Tom Bishop founded Glass Imaging in 2019 in Los Altos, California. Both worked at Apple on the computational photography behind Portrait Mode. It was not Attar's first exit to Apple: the company acquired his earlier startup, the Israeli multi-camera developer LinX Imaging, in 2015 for about $20 million.
Glass Imaging raised about $29 million before OpenAI's offer arrived: a $9.3 million extended seed round in 2024, then a $20 million Series A in May 2025 led by Insight Venture Management.

OpenAI's hardware shopping list gets a third name
The Glass Imaging deal is OpenAI's third disclosed hardware-adjacent acquisition in 17 months.

OpenAI is also reportedly building a screenless speaker priced around $300. Its ChatGPT for Financial Services push and its capacity deal behind Firmus's planned Australian IPO show the same company spending on consumer products as fast as it spends on infrastructure.
What OpenAI and Glass Imaging won't say
The unconfirmed status of the deal leaves basic questions open. Neither company has said whether Glass Imaging's contract with Honor continues under new ownership, whether the GlassAI team joins an OpenAI hardware group or stays independent, or what OpenAI paid beyond the "more than $300 million" figure both the Journal and TechCrunch used. OpenAI has not said when, or whether, it plans to confirm the acquisition at all.
