Microsoft Rebuilds Copilot Around Home, Code and Autopilot

Microsoft rebuilt Copilot around three destinations called Home, Code and Autopilot on Friday, folding its personal and Microsoft 365 versions of the assistant into one product aimed mainly at business users. Jared Spataro, Microsoft's chief marketing officer for AI at Work, announced the changes in a Sept. 25 post on the company's official blog.

Autopilot is a rename of Scout, the always-on agent Microsoft introduced at its Build developer conference in June 2026, according to the blog post and VentureBeat's coverage of the announcement. Executive Vice President Jacob Andreou, who leads Copilot, described the ambition at a Sept. 23 product preview in Seattle: "What this means at its core is hosting and sharing an application literally becomes as simple as saving and sharing a Word document," he said, according to VentureBeat.

The announcement arrives two weeks after OpenAI opened its own Agents API beta and three days after Anthropic cut Claude Opus 5.5's price by 20 percent. Copilot itself runs on models from Anthropic, OpenAI and xAI's Grok, Fortune reported.

What Home, Code and Autopilot each do

Home merges Chat with Cowork, Microsoft's tool for longer delegated tasks, and adds direct editing of Word, PowerPoint and Excel files. Code lets employees describe an application, dashboard or automation in plain language and have Copilot build it, using the technology underneath GitHub Copilot. Autopilot keeps a persistent identity, memory and workspace inside Microsoft 365; a company demo shown at the preview featured an agent named Dot tracking Black Friday retail preparations across email, Teams messages and inventory records, according to VentureBeat.

Chief Executive Satya Nadella said identity and oversight are the point of the redesign. "Every agent has to have an identity. Everything it does needs to be observed," he said, according to VentureBeat's report on the event.

The consumer features that did not survive

Friday's changes build on an Aug. 13, 2026 decision to merge the separate consumer and business Copilot apps into one, a rollout Microsoft said would reach Windows and Mac desktops worldwide by mid-September, according to Thurrott. That merger retired Copilot's Group Chats, Podcasts and Deep Research features for consumer accounts, Thurrott reported.

Microsoft 365 Copilot passed 30 million paid seats in July 2026, with net additions doubling quarter over quarter, Fortune reported. Copilot Vice President Annie Pearl told Fortune the goal is for Copilot to become "an all-in-one productivity suite" where people delegate tasks to agents rather than run them manually.

What it costs, and what Microsoft has not priced yet

Existing Copilot pricing carries over unchanged, according to VentureBeat's review of Microsoft's materials.

Microsoft has not published pricing for Autopilot, Code or the new managed runtime that hosts Copilot-built apps, saying only that usage-based charges will reflect the model used, the context retrieved, the tools invoked and how long a task runs, VentureBeat reported. Home and Code begin rolling out to Microsoft's Frontier preview program in the coming weeks; Autopilot expands to private preview at the end of September.
